Yesterday, Billy my Silky, and I drove forty miles to see Chico a rescue I found online. Chico was pulled the day before he was to be euthanized from the biggest kill shelter in New York. He has be surrendered by his owners in deplorable shape and I was told he wouldn't eat except scraps hand fed. A woman that runs a cat rescue , saw him on line and saved him. Now he is living with her, two large dog rescues and 30, yes thirty, cats.
When we met today he was scared and curios. At this rescue shelter (I know, that is indeed an oxymoron) there were 140 cats on three floors. I was only on the first floor but all but the kittens roamed free. While we waited the cats mostly came over to Billy to check him out. Billy is not fond of cats but this was their turf and he was curious. Once Chico came, they were both unleashed and checked each other out. I brought dog treats and biscuits and despite what I had been told Chico sat for me and ate whatever I offered. He was dirty and un-kept and had an open wound above his left eye. When I leashed the two, it was as if Chico wanted to come with me too. I felt badly and sorry he couldn't come with us. He needs to be bathed, fixed, tested for heart worms and given shots. I don't know when that will happen, but when it does, I am going to get him and I am going to try.........And if it works, there will be four.
