There is a right way and a wrong way to do things especially when it comes to installing a roof covering. The pictures in this post are a pictorial representation of how NOT to install rolled roofing or shingles for that matter. While inspecting a property in Franklin, TN, this 3 year old installation definitely had some problems that will cost the seller some bucks.

Picture one illustrates a bad tear (red arrow) in the rolled roofing which had not been overlapped and sealed properly. The white arrows show questionable sealing where the tabs adjoin the rolled roofing.

Picture 2 is a classic illustration on how not to terminate the valley seam. The asphalt shingles need to be installed over the rolled roofing. It will be just a matter of time before this whole thing leaks like a sieve.

And just for laughs, let’s not overlook the Bucky Beaver effect(white arrows) and the customized stack boot (magenta).

That one looks like a rough roof.  In most of your photos, which I enjoy every day, I have to really look to see the problems.  Remember, I'm not a pro so I miss a lot.  These however, were pretty clear.  Did the deal close?  Did the seller concede any money?  We have a lot of deals die because a cheap seller won't fix anything saying it is an "AS IS" sale.

This looks like a harvey homeowner roof to me.  I enjoy reading your blog and often chuckle at the way people do things.  Your blog is very informative and provides me with good daily information to help my clients.  Thanks.

Morning Mike,

Could it be the contractor intended to hold a class on what not to do using this project as their classic example? Hey, just a thought!

Have a great weekend.

Don't see rolled roofing much in our part of the world, but I use to se it occasionally back in Kentucky. Never did like the stuff, but I guess it serves its purpose.

WOW, what a roof job, looks like this guy did about as good as I did on my plumbing adventure, might want to leave it to the professionals next time.
