Get To Know Your Neighbours Before You Buy

Real Estate Agent with Royal Lepage Nanaimo Realty

When you buy your new home in Nanaimo, like it or not you are also 'buying' your neighbors.

Buyers always do home inspections to make sure that the house is free of defects, but a surprising number of people don't take the time to look at the people they will be living next door to.

Here are some things to look for in the people you will be living next door to:

1.  Pets - Do small, yipping dogs bother you?  Or would having the neighbor's cat stroll through your back yard be a bother?  Try telling the seller you're a pet owner and ask about other dogs or cats in the neighborhood.get to know your neighbor

2.  Back yard junk yards - Some people tend to use their back yard as a huge, outdoor storage area.  This can create unexpected noise and also attract rodents and other vermin.  Discreetly peak over the fence to make sure that you don't end up living next to somebody's storage yard.

3.  Party time - Speaking of noise, try to visit the home you want to buy on a weekend afternoon or evening.  Back yard entertaining doesn't have to be a bad thing.  Just make sure that it's something that you're not going to find bothersome.

Once you find a home that you really like, drive through the neighborhood at different times of the day and on different days of the week.  A neighborhood that seems quiet during the week when most people are at work can be dramatically different on the weekend when your neighbors are at home.

There's also nothing wrong with knocking on the next door neighbor's front door and introducing yourself, to ask them how they like living in Nanaimo.  Most people love to talk about where they live and will also be curious to find out more about you, their future next door neighbor!
