Whether it's blistering summer heat or freezing winter mornings, this 30 ft high, 40 foot long, 2.5 ton metal giant has sat high atop this mountain greeting travelers as they entered Riverside County along the 60 Freeway.
For years, I passed along this route wondering what he was all about. Last week, rush hour traffic congestion enticed me off the freeway and I found myself exploring the mystery. Seems this enormous metal structure, affectionately called 'Eddy the Mammoth' has the huge responsibility of guarding the Dinosaurs at the Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center off the 60 Fwy. He enjoys an unobstructive view of the Jurupa Valley and is just one of the many structures on the grounds along with an Earth Science Museum and Botanical Gardens.
The Ruth and Sam Kirkby Earth Science Museum houses a unique collection of intriguing and informative exhibits. While the Cactus and Succulent Gardens have a myriad of mature and unique species to explore.
