Technology Throwback ... to 1964

Real Estate Technology with Rentec Direct

51 years ago today,  IBM released its flashy System/360 (S/360) mainframe computer and boy-howdy, was it sleek!!!  It could process up to 34,500 instructions per second.  Wow, that WAS pretty cool.

Nowadays your fit and trim desktop can process billions of instructions per second. It is staggering to think of the technological advancements in the past 50 years!

I'm not a dinosaur (just yet) however when I first began working in Property Management, back in 1991, we handled all of our accounting, tenant tracking, applications, tenant screening, leases and maintenance requests with good old-fashioned pen and paper.  We lugged boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of paperwork to a storage facility.  Offering one tenant reference took a 1/2 hour as you had to walk to the storage room, dig through files and hope all documents were intact.  Geese-Louise!  I'm exhausted just remembering all that!  If you would have given me access to Property Management Software back in the 90's, such as I work with every day at Rentec Direct, I would have been absolutely blown away!  A paperless office?  24/7 Online access to all my files and systems? Multi-user Portals?  A gift from God!

Just for fun, today when you're navigating your busy day, take note of all of the abso-freakin-lutely amazing tools we have at our fingertips that some smarty invented.  Let me know what your "couldn't live without" is.

When I opened my first real estate office in 1961, we were still using dial phones. There were no cell phones, computers, fax machines or copy machines. And, there was no MLS. We make carbon copies of contracts as we wrote them by hand or used a typewriter. It was not a bad way of life.

Roy - My husband laughed at me the other day when I panicked without my cell phone and he reminded me that people actually lived just fine before they were invented.  Guess we just get use to our tools!

Isn't that absolutely amazing!?  In 1983 I bought my first computer - an Apple IIE.  I never really used that computer much, but my kids did.  Then 10 years later in 1993, I bought another computer with Windows.  That's when my world opened up!

I've been a Realtor since 1981.  Soon after our office connected to the MLS via computer, rather than needing to rely 100% on MLS books published and delivered to our office door each Saturday morning.  I was one of the first, if not the very first agent in Sacramento to get a pager.  My first cellphone had a handle on it with a cord.  It looked like this picture.  Progress has been amazing!

I should also add that in the 1980s, I remember the dozen or so agents in our office begging our broker to unleash $440 for a fax machine.  I chuckle just thinking back on how far technology has taken us!

I love the "cell phone" pic, Myrl!  You almost needed a backpack for it!  Wow, over $400 for a fax! And I bet it had that thermal paper that the print faded on after 6 months.  We use to photo copy our faxes.  At least there are some environmental gains that have been had.

I think technology is a blessing and a cursing.  Some areas it has helped with streamlining processes in others it has created more work.
