Simply put, RSS feeds allow your readers to subscribe to your blog. When you write a new post, it is fed to them automatically, either on their webpage (for example, MyYahoo) or it can be send via email.
It is a simple way to distribute your blog content to your readers, without them having to go to your blog.
I recommend you check out Feedburner. It is owned by Google. It is free. You can install a widget into your blog from Feedburner so readers can subscribe. There are many choices, but my blogging consultants / blogging network like Feedburner.

You want a feed...you want to plant your feed everywhere that helps spread the word on your site/blog/photo/video/podcast stream. If you have good content, rather than make the viewer/visitor come back to see what is new if anything is new in the cookie jar, the subscription to your RSS/ATOM/XML or whatever format feed is a good thing. Its convenient and does not make someone who wants to stay in touch with new content have to work or search for it. No wasted trips to your site if nothing new is there The RSS updates automatically and sends the word out that hey...new content posted you might want to know about and alerts folks to this happening. Even if it is not used alot, it will gain popularity in time and help you spread the word on what you work so hard to create! Good luck!
