incentiveASK AN AMBASSADOR:  One Comment Can....

When they founded ActiveRain they realized something important, it's more than just writing a blog post.  Frankly, we can write a blog post on many platforms, including our Wordpress site, but the interaction is what addicts us to the Rain.  Getting comments is the reward, the reinforcement for continuing to write.

A comment can be many different things:

  • Just a way of saying hello even when we don't have anything new to add to the conversation.
  • Might be the encouragement needed to keep a blogger going.  They FOUND me!!!!!
  • A way of earning community disdain...hello drive-by commenters, hope you enjoy your 25 points!
  • An agreement to the post
  • A disagreement to the post (play civil, and is the post consumer oriented or Rain oriented?)
  • The seed for a blog post of its own
  • The start of an interaction that may lead to more.  Maybe just a conversation on the post, maybe a new follower, maybe a new friend that you'll meet in person some day!
  • Something that gets found by the search engines (so consider carefully what you leave in the Rain).
  • A bridge to referrals (or depending on the comment, a burnt bridge)
  • Information shared

Comments come in all varieties and the comment thread is often the best part of a blog post.  Where you get to see the Rain community in action.  Where you can learn who plays well in the sandbox and who is due for some remedial time with the bucket & pail :)

And if you're been lurking, it's time to grab the keyboard and start leaving a comment or two or twenty.  It's how we got started!

Keep on blogging!

P.S.  We're STILL working on reciprocating all the comments from our Kitten post into the March Madness contest.  We WILL honor our promise, it's just taking time!

Great reminder about what the "unseen" value of Active Rain is when people first join. It took me a while to sort it out but once I did it was great!

I think the community spirit here is what holds it all together. Oh, sure, it's a great blogging platform, but as you said, there are other places to find that...

Bridget, And the drive by commenters totally miss the intent of this community.

JoAnn, It's fun to get to know the people here.  They offer a ton of great information that we use regularly to help our business.

Hannah, Bill knows his +!

Michael, So many people are just part of our days, so when they're not around there's definitely a gap in the day.

Randy, That's the irony, from a purely business perspective, WP blogging has more brand building for the individual, but the lack of interaction probably prevents many from blogging on that pipeline.  We all like the reinforcements that comments provide us.

Anita, It's a crucial part of the community aspect.

Tammie, It's so nice to be able to reach out to fellow Rainers and sound them out with a problem we're facing, or sometimes to just vent about a sideways deal.

Nina, It's not obvious until we get into it, then it all starts to click.

Lenn, I know we're not the best at making the rounds with our comments (especially lately as business picks up), but we always try to at least acknowledge the comments on our own posts.

Susan, Pure blogging, lots of places.  This community interaction?  I haven't seen anything else like it, so we're here every day.

BLiz- I was looking for your Ask an Ambassador post yesterday and i'm glad I found it.  You are spot on with this one.  Commenting is an important part of this community, especially when the reader finds that they are learning not only from the post but from the comments as well.  It is how we get to know each other.

Replying to comments and reciprocating comments is a big deal to me. I try to do both and I appreciate those that do both for me!

Hi Bliz - I agree completely. Comments are one of the most important bits of genius the founders built into AR, and provide the fuel for some of the most interesting things that happen here.

Kathy, I ran pretty late with this one.  I had to do a market report earlier in the day, and fighting some chest bug (bronchitis??) most of the week, so took longer to get to our weekly AAA post.

Sharon, I have to beg forgiveness on the reciprocation part.  I just don't get out and about as much as I'd like to.

Dick, A comment can often lead to a "Hey, come look over here at what so and so said!!!" moment.  Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's a "REALLY??? ________ had the nerve to actually TYPE that instead of just THINK it?? "  :)

Community Disdain?  I'd not thought of that before.  Surely not a badge I'm looking to earn.

But all those are points....very valid reasons to comment and add to the discussion.

For all the outspoken people here, it's interesting to think there are still wallflowers.

Claude, I suspect there are more wallflowers than most realize.  I know I lurked months before my first comment.  I see periodically some of our subscribers will click Like post, but I don't necessarily recall them ever leaving a comment.  In time I think they'll engage more.  And that CD badge is one I don't want on my AR sash either :)

Many more wallflowers than I would consider, okay I can accept that.

BLiz as a wallflower?  That one's making me choke more, that's a difficult one to truly accept.  Evidently, there was a big change.

Claude, Indeed, once upon a time, much lurking, little commenting!  Months later to write the first post.  Then a 30/30 challenge got me in the habit of blogging daily and here we are years later still hitting the keyboard every day!

Hi BLiz - reciprocating comments is much easier for me as I don't get 1/10 of those that you receive and I still miss some.  Commenting on another blogger's post is one of the best ways to receive one on our own (hint). :)

Michael Jacobs - it's nice to see you in your new profile picture.  I was unable to find you in your last one (were you behind one of the trees?)

Eric, No doubt it works, and I'm STILL working on catching up from the March Madness entry!!  Today was 12 hours straight of real estate stuff while on vacation from the day job and I'm no closer to caught up on those now than I was yesterday.  But today's closing was a blogging result, and one of the afternoon buyers was directly from blogging.

Grant, It's nice to get comments, but even now after 5+ years of blogging I know some of our pure consumer facing posts will get no comments, but they make the phone ring and that works for us :)

You are so right when you say that there are so many venues for blogging, but they seems like one way streets... so rarely you get comments.

AR in that sense is live... often shallow... mostly shallow, but live

Jon, We almost never get a comment on our WP site, but that's to be expected.  AR has it's moments where the topics and comments go deeper, but true, often conversations are more superficial, just showing support and moving on to the next post.
