When a "Big Box" isn't Better--It's Time to Move.

A few days ago I made the decision to change real estate companies. I had been with a "big box" broker for my entire career. It was important almost two decades ago to have a well-known brand with an array of tools to support my start up real estate career. It gave my seller's listings a boost in the market place. But now I'm going to a very dynamic boutique style company--Yep, I've made a big change to a smaller brokerage.

The internet has been a great equalizer in real estate. In the past few years our local association and MLS have provided EVERY broker and agent (big and small) with  a number of  innovative tools to get homes sold. With reciprocity, homes are shared with other websites like Realtor.com, Zillow and every big box site, so a listing on the MLS will be seen on every site. I was faced with the question, "Why continue to pay for the big box brand?" And, more importantly, "Why have my clients pay the high big box fees with little added benefit?"

Those two questions helped make my decision and I made my big change to a smaller more dynamic, boutique realty company. At Boardman Realty, I work directly with the broker, Teresa Boardman, not an office manager. T is not only an excellent REALTOR®, expert photographer and blogger, she is my friend. We work well together. It is my goal to exceed the expectations of my clients and with a smaller "box", innovative marketing and lower fees, I am sure to be able to continue to do that.

Big Box firms do have advantages, but they don't have Teresa or Teri.

As a consumer, the advantage then is clear to go to Boardman Realty.

Hi Claude, Thank you for your kind words. I do believe when an agent starts in the business the big box brokers do provide additional guidance. That said, our local association provides so many excellent tools and with reciprocity, there is little to differentiate between the big/small companies anymore. A small company will be able to offer very competitive, high quality service to buyers and/or sellers which made my decision to change much easier.

Congratulations Teri on your move!

I agree, internet changed real estate. I don't think it is about how big the company is but the people who are on your team. I moved last year to a small company too and I'm glad I did.

Hi Teri Eckholm ,  Good for you.  I also started out with a large company. My wife also started with the same company until she opened her own. We have a total of 5 agents with a few more on the way after graduation.  They all get the personal attntion that we wanted but didn't get at the big name company.

Larry--I think this will be good for me as an agent....but even better for my buyers and sellers. Same high quality service and lower costs. Can't beat that!

Teri, I hope, you are doing great.

Most experienced agents have left big boxes and joined smaller team and client oriented brokers.
