Spring Cleaning Checklist

Most people dread the annual spring cleaning but when your home is on the market it is a must “to do” task. Murney Associates Agent’s have created a checklist and 5 great tips for easy spring cleaning must do’s.

  1. Work from top to bottom and inside out when beginning your spring cleaning, that way you are not having to do double the work in the end. Cobwebs occur most in the winter months due to lack of humidity. Start with the ceilings, light fixtures and ceiling fans. It is best to use your vacuum hose to reach the ceilings and corners for the cobwebs.

Tip #1 When cleaning the ceiling fans use an old pillowcase. Open the pillowcase and slide it over the blades. When you press the sides of the pillowcase down as you slide the pillowcase towards you it takes the dust off and holds it inside the pillowcase so there is not a mess or dust flying.

2. Windows can be a huge eye sore when clients are viewing your home if they are dirty. Make sure to clean the outside first (including the screens) of dust/dirt then move to the inside. Don’t forget to dust the drapes/curtains and wash the blinds as well.

Tip #2 Use a plastic broom to brush the screens of all dirt and debris then spray hot soapy water with a hose spray and leave them to dry in the sun.

3. Bed mattresses and furniture get just as dusty as floors sometimes. Make sure to dust around the beds including headboards and sideboards then vacuum your mattresses, loveseats, couches, ottomans, coffee tables and end tables. Use a lightly scented dust remover and soft cloth.   This tip will leave the furniture smelling fresh.

Tip #3 If you have leather furniture one of the safest and best ways to clean your leather is to use warm water mixed with a small amount of lliquid IVORY soap. It takes away the dirt and grim and makes the leather look, smell and feel fresh and clean.

4. The dreaded bathroom should be next on the list. From scrubbing shower doors and walls to behind the toilet and cabinets you need to clean it all. An easy way to do this is after someone takes a shower and the room has humidity built up. Things are easier to wipe down but use a microfiber cloth for this.

Tip #4 Take your shower curtain and wash it with a few fluffy towels and laundry detergent to move mildew. Hang it up to dry when done.

5.  Finally, the floors. Use your vacuum hose first to go around the baseboards for a solid clean. If you have hardwood floors using a steamer is fantastic to bring grime to the surface before mopping with a good hardwood cleaner and finisher. For carpet, once again go around the baseboards then add a carpet freshener. Let it sit for at least an hour then vacuum up for a fresh smell. If you have area rugs just roll them up, vacuum and mop under them then roll back down.

Tip #5 Using a microfiber mop on  your hardwood or laminate floors helps reduce the dust that accumulates and makes it easier to mop after.
