Adding Color to your Exterior of your Home

Have you ever thought WHAT you need to do when it comes time to sell a home? There are numerous things you could focus on, but today we are focusing on the exterior, and curb appeal. As a homeowner, you want potential buyers to come and look at your home. Remember – the first thing they see is the outside. This is called Curb Appeal. Here are a few ideas for adding color to the Exterior of your Home.

Update with Colorful Siding – If your exterior is in need of repair, consider adding vinyl siding that has some color. This is a great way to take care of 2 items with 1 update.

Windows – A term to know is Cladding. This is where the aluminum wrap on an exterior window frame lets you have the beauty of wood inside, and a low-maintenance covering outside. The cladding is offered in a variety of colors so you can add BOLD, or be neutral.

Hardware and Lighting – A great way to coordinate the exterior is to match the hardware of your doors with the lighting fixtures. Gives the outside of your home a new look and coordinating features add value.

Add Stone – With all of the available colors and types of stone that are available in today’s market – you can find something that will brighten up the flower bed, and you could match it to the exterior stone of your home.

Upgrade the Garage Door – With adding a new garage door, you could add a whole new look to the outside of your home. If the paint is peeling on your old door or it is getting warped, it might be to your benefit to upgrade. You can add value to your home with getting a dual insulated door with windows.

Joey Torkildson .... I read an article just the other day that said updating or painting your garage door was the #1 thing you can do to increase the likelihood of your selling a home based on appeal.  Your post is spot on!

Joey, color choices are very personal and can be controversial. How colorful you go, depends on the style of the neighborhood, for sure. I live in a colorful neighborhood and recently repainted my house from pale yellow to periwinkle (picture below). It got a lot of attention and a lot of neighbors to "up" their color game as well.

Nina! I love it and you are absolutely right in regards to color vs. area and neighborhood. ;)

First thing to do is set a budget.  If $1,000 is all you can and/or want to spend, that can be applied a long way!

A great looking front door, freshly painted, nice hardware and colorful plants. I think color here can be a great addition too.

I have heard that blue houses are harder to sell. Seems that recently I have buyers choosing to have their new homes built with blue siding. It is a choice for the north east that can look very traditional in some homes. I think if the shade is right, it can look very inviting. Complimented with a nice red door it says welcome!!

Some great advice here.  For paint color, I think you need to be very careful and look at the neighborhood.  Bold and bright colors do not do well in our area right outside NYC.  It just doesn't work.  I do love Nina Hollander's though - it's a pretty and soothing color, and not too bright.

I agree with most of the comments. I think it's great to be bold and stand out if the neighborhood is conducive to that. If one is selling, I'd say stay in the middle colorwise and add pop through landscaping--and maybe the front door.

In our neighborhood, it's pretty much what shade of beige do you want. Some brave people have branched out to gray, but the only real color is doors and shutters, per plan. However, in neighborhoods where you can, these are good suggestions.

Love the photo in your post .... must be Ireland, where I'm headed shortly for vacation.  One of my favorite things to do in Ireland is visit the quaint and charming towns that are known for their colorful homes.

And  yes, as a professional home stager I always advise sellers to take care of the exterior of their home before putting it on the market!

I love love the bright painted exteriors. Reminds me Europe. Not sure, why we see mostly gray and brown-ish colors in my hood.
