Cats. Your Humble Raleigh, Cary, Apex area Real Estate Agent Likes them. But...

Let's get this right out there in the open. I like cats. I prefer dogs. But I like cats. My only cat, Scratch, was a great pet. He loved to be right by your side, he played fetch just like a dog, and he was a great companion. As a responsible pet owner, I kept him up to date on his visits to the vet, kept him well groomed and I ironed him at least once a week....

What? You're not supposed to iron your cat? Hmmm. He never seemed to complain. Oh well, I'll have to look into that.

Now to my beef with cats...

Actually, I don't have a beef with cats. But I do have a beef with people who have dozens of them running around loose, especially when they're trying to sell their Raleigh, Cary, Apex area homes.

Yesterday, when showing homes to some first time Raleigh, Cary, Apex area home buyers, this is what it looked like when we opened the door...

OK, I get it. You love your cats. But, not everyone loves your feline friends as much as you do. And, even though my folks realized that they were buying a home and not the cats inside of it, this guy was the deal killer for my folks...

So, my friends, if you're selling your Raleigh, Cary, Apex area home, if at all possible, please, please, please, try to keep your cats, and all your pets for that matter, in one room and not running around while people are trying to view your home. I know you love 'em. But if they squashed a possible sale of your home, you might think twice about letting them run around loose.

Good Tuesday morning Realtor Craig Rutman -

Well...... Who knew :)  I like cats too but am a dog lover.  Not sure Debbie would let a cat in the house.  She's not a fan at all.  Go figure.

Considering I am an underaged "Old Cat Lady", I love cats!  I love Dogs too.  Great post and I will add.... if I am showing your home and one of your pets runs outside and gets hurt or disappear, I would be heartbroken

Now that is a fun way to get the point of being a responsible pet owner seller across.  Thanks for the smile.  Love the 'ironing a cat'!

Love your post!  Fun content and great visuals.  In my experience, most cats hide during showings, so this hasn't been a problem.  Although, I did have one listing with two big Maine Coon cats who wanted to get outside at any cost.  The seller demanded that we "not let the cats out" which required gymastics on the part of both the agents and buyers to keep them inside.  We did sell the home pretty quickly so it didn't turn out to be a problem, but I hear you.  Pets can be an issue in showing a home!

Pets can move a sale, and if they can be smelled just as the door is opened that buyer may not even go in.  Where's the disclaimer that no cats were ironed in the preparation of this post?

My market is so tight now that a home filled with ferrals wouldn't break the deal.   Great post!!  I totally understand the pet peeve

That's hilarious, Craig!  I've seen cats scatter, and it is a real turn off for many buyers.  I agree with Gail Robinson above - the toughest part is keeping a cat inside that wants to get out.  Very distracting for me and my buyers.

A good reminder.  I had a cat escape and we had to herd the cat... we got that cat back in and another an out.  It was not fun!

Ha, great pictures!  Yes, any kind of pet craziness can get in the way of buyers actually seeing the home.

Craig Rutman Why is it whenever a seller puts up a note saying don't let the cat out, the minute you open the door, the cat is gone. I like cats too, but sellers need to be better educated about their cats and dogs.

Pets, whether cats or dogs, are often a problem when showing homes. There are plenty of buyers who don't like pets, espeically other people's, and having to be especially careful about where Fido or Fluffy are at all times makes it difficult to do what you are there to do - see the house.

Many sellers go to great lengths to make sure their pets are out of the way. Some don't seem to care and do little or nothing. Worse is when the MLS does not state there are pets around and you find them at the door

Jeff Dowler CRS - Not mentioning on the MLS or in the showing instructions that Fido or Fluffy will be in the home has always been a PET peeve of mine! (see ehat I did there?!!!)
