Tices Shoal is an area located on the Barnegat Bay side of Island Beach State Park, Ocean County, New Jersey. It is a common site for boats and other water craft. At times, boats in excess of 1000 have been counted in the area.
Lifeguards will provide protection along a popular stretch of beach in Island Beach State Park this summer, but access from the Barnegat Bay won’t be free, state officials announced. The swimming area will be just north of the recently reconstructed Fisherman’s Walkway access point, which is about four miles south of the park entrance, according to a state Department of Environmental Protection release.
In part, the petition to keep Tices Shoal free states:
“Tice's Shoal has existed for 20+ years. It is a well-loved and frequented spot for boaters to go and relax on the bay, and occasionally cross over to Island Beach State Park. This has always been free of charge - but the state is currently trying to impose a $3 fee on boaters going across. Beaches should be free. Tice's Shoal was one of the last ways to enjoy a natural resource for free in New Jersey (if you were able to pay the costs of owning a boat). This is a shameless money grab by the state. There has been no need for a lifeguard to be placed at the beach, which will be accompanying and 'justifying' the new charge. There are other ways to raise money for state parks.”

The shoal consists of an expanse of shallow waternext to the state park’s island, which farther north becomes Seaside Park and Seaside Heights. Tice’s Shoal has no defined boundaries; the only landmark is a wooden overlook deck. From there, a path extends to the other side, the ocean side. Some days a dozen boats will be there, on others several hundred to a thousand will be anchored together. All you need is a boat or a friend with one.
