Bette, they are very creative and always seem to find a solution to get the food they desire. Trying to mentally imagine how your cord and corn cob could keep the squirrels occupied.

Our treeline is about 100 feet from the back of the our house. When setting up the patio furniture this weekend I saw some nut shells near our back door. The squirrels were a long way from their trees. I sure hope I don't find any damage when I look closer.

I always get a kick out of bit rodents, squirrels included - on many of my hikes I'm harrassed by hungry chipmunks & marmots...as you say, they're right there with death and taxes.

Howdy Bette,
I have seen some great videos on squirrels getting to food that was set somewhere you would bet a million dollars there was no way in the world for them to reach it. It may have taken more than one try but they always do. Mark

Squirrels do a lot of damage in our neighborhood gardens and they are persistent raiders of bird feeders.

Noah, the corn cob tip actually works, but we have about 20 regulars here.
Hannah, it isn't a solution but it tires them out and is quite entertaining.
Debbie, just make certain there are no opportunities for them to get inside your home
John, there isn't a whole lot you can do to deter them, so you might as well let them humor you.
Mark, To have some of the intelligence of a squirrel, like Houdini of course.
It's interesting Roy Kelley , we mainly feed the Bluebirds mealworms, which most neighbors don't, but the squirrels don't seem to have any desire to hang out in their feeding area. Do you suppose it's because the Bluebirds have a huge Leonberger protecting them or their lack of taste for mealworms?
Bette,
That is a great solution and funny. I would have never thought of it!
Squirrels can be very annoying. . . honestly there are times I am glad my cat's natural instincts have kicked in. . . that said I never knew there were ways to distract them. Thank you Bette. Enjoy the gorgeous weekend we have on tap!
Hi Bette Gottwald , We have a resident squirrel in the neighborhood. We won't have any problem findind corn in this area. I'll give it a try.
Thanks Bette, this sounds like a good way to distract these little pests.
Bette-I will have to give that a try. Darn squirrels have done so much damage and broke a number of feeders by jumping on them and breaking plus they even chewed thru plastic garbage cans to get at food that was in there. I am not a fan at all of them.
Hi Bette Gottwald
Hard to rid yards of the antics of squirrels. We used to have them but they have moved on as I guess they didn't like our rockscape landscaping and the removal of our citrus trees. I like your article as our squirrels are protected and no one wants to think of more severe methods.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Have a happy and safe holiday season!
I never heard about this as a solution to squirrels. Interesting Bette.
