The Good Ole Days! Ya know, before Drug Tests and Background Checks.

There's positive inspiration and negative irritation in the housing market. Some people had owned homes all of their adult lives then gave it all up for some reason or another, Others have never felt the sensation. In a World full of material things nothing comes close to the knowledge and feeling that you're home. It's the tangible evidence of your accomplishment.

Granted, not everyone needs or wants to own a home. They're expensive, sometimes hard to maintain and things can breakdown in them. For tens of thousands of years the cave was all we needed to survive. Modern man has many more obstacles to hurdle in order to obtain the proper cave today. Actually, men don't have the lead when it involves putting a roof over your head in early adult life. Girls outshine that ability almost two to one. The following may be an insight as to why this gap continues to grow.

The wood frame homeMuch to do about jobs and little to do about mortgages here is a brief synopsis of a conversation with a contractor who had a single position available within his construction company. The numbers are not exact but close enough to understand why we're in the economic shape we're in. Construction is a great field to explore because the use of a 2 by 4 can benefit almost anyone as a powerful attitude adjuster.

The ad was placed in the newspaper for construction work with some experience helpful but not necessary (will train) must pass drug test and background check. Within days 178 applications were received. Only two applicants admitted to prior arrests or drug use on their application, the rest were further scrutinized. Within the week results were tabulated and background checks found 131 applicants had falsified the information they provided on their application, including one unregistered sex offender. With 45 contenders still in the hunt for work the odds were impressive that a good candidate could be found. Another week passes and the drug tests begin rolling in, and I intentionally use the word rolling. Despite what experts may say, marijuana use and building codes don't always mix well. Of course other drugs had also shown up in the testing but pot was it's #1 component. Legality aside, my risk factor remains much more comfortable where my project's safety and liability is concerned.

Now down to 8 potential employees out of 170 more originally, that  can bring a tear to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The dreaeded "face to face" interview will decide the fate of one American who's willing to be honest and is comfortable in their own skin within the next couple of days. We didn't get here by being stupid but we remain here by learning from our mistakes. Take the saying "today is the first day of the rest of your life" to heart.

Wow, 178 whittled down to only 8 before even beginning the face to face interviews. I hope at least one of those 8 is hireable!

Kevin,

Indeed, it is tough out there.  Could this be one of the factors why our unemployment numbers remain high?  A

In a roundabout way it might be construed as such Ron and Alexandra Seigel. Our main culprit is the dollar's weakness and ridiculously low interest rates. When the Federal Reserve and U. S. Treasury are reactive this is where we end up. It's not even a rock and a hard place, we're between two rocks. GDP is an indicator but only after the fact. Consumer confidence is at all time lows and those two facts do not make for good bedfellows. Where to go?

Hello Kevin ... yes things have changed in this day in age! I am working on a construction project in San Jose and yes we have to take a drug test and have certifications to operate crans, boom lifts, fork lifts, swing stages and have a Minimum OSHA 10 ;o)

Dozers, backhoes, articulated and not are in my history along with 20 plus stories on the swing stage. None are places where I could find drugs let alone want any Robert (Vegas Bob) Swetz. Better you than me as for construction my good man, those days are over for me.

Kevin, it's amazing, you would think that people who are serious about finding a job would get off the drugs.  Then again, maybe some are just filling another square in an entitlement scheme.

I'm thinking that the ones working for your contractor are in the 5% or so that made the cut to move forward Roy Kelley. We certainly do hope that that's true!

Debbie Reynolds, in another scenario, a "temp" was given the opportunity to be employed full-time knowing 60 days prior that there will be drug testing. The fail cost full benefits, including retirement, and a 30% pay increase.

Gabe Sanders , the adage about Florida is that we get paid in Sunshine here. That doesn't negate the criminal records or illegal drug use though.
