Pet Resumes are the Newest Invention for Renters

Pet Resumes are the Newest Invention for Renters

If you own a dog or a cat and are trying to rent, you have probably found difficulties getting a landlord to approve your application due to the pets you own.

Recently websites have become the latest tool to help renters and you can buy them online. There are many styles and the consumer can pick what is said and then for $32-$48, the resume is prepared and sent to them.

Some insurance companies have a list of 10-12 breeds that they will not allow to live on properties they insure. There has been some dog attacks and even maulings so landlords are concerned about being sued.

Things like personality, fixed, vacinations, health habbits, personality, and a picture. Also a recomendation of the pet helps the renter.

The only piece of paper regarding pets is the vet history for vaccinations and no reports of dog bites. Now my Brutus is afraid of spiders and his own tail winds which usually happen about 230 am when you least expect it. He will also bark incessantly if he sees a spider land on his nose as it did the other morning. Bridget only barks when Brutus does, because he scared the bejeebers out of her and she knocked the spider off his nose.

Agreed!  Actually had a renter share photos of her little dog - adorable and reported his behavior, etc.  One reason the landlord agreed to take them in.  Thanks.

Many years ago, when our house burned and we headed to Arizona for the winter, we were trying to find a rental. We had 2 dogs and a cat. Oh boy.

One rental manager said that one of our dogs was OK, but the other was not because she was too large. He suggested that we have her put to sleep.

I very kindly suggested that he have HIMSELF put to sleep.

We ended up running into someone from home who owned a small trailer park. We purchased a park model trailer and the gentleman "created" a trailer space for us where none had existed before. When we left to come home he purchased the trailer from us.

I think this is a great idea. I know of a 55+ Community that asks detailed information regarding the pets and also requests to see a photo. You could have a large breed dog that is calm, friendly and well trained, as well as having a small dog that barks constantly and nips at every person that walks by. Better to be safe than sorry.

Hi Bette Gottwald  Unfortunately it is the homeowner/tenant who did not train their cats to use a kitty litter box.

Hi Nina Hollander I have heard about using DNA but it must be incredibly expensive.

Hi Greg Riley No, not an April Fool's joke as renters with pets have become a big problem.

Hi Richie Alan Naggar author PEARLS FOR THE SOUL .com books  I think sometimes the owner is more concerned about the pets than the people. Of course they have probably had prior issues with tenants.

Hi Richard Iarossi It must be hard for tenants with pets to find nice rentals as most Property Managers have had past bad tenants.

Hi Angelica Blatt - Yes it is a novel idea and I am sorry I didn't think of it.

Hi Jerry Lucas Totally agree as it would hold up in court but then they could just say they had never had priors before with their little puppy. No way to validate the info as fact or fiction.

Hi Fred Griffin Yes a big cleaning deposit and an OK from the insurance company would go a long way.

Hi Evelyn Johnston I am sure any positive info from a tenant or vet would be helpful when making a decision.

Hi Christine Donovan Absolutely as if they care enough to pay for a resume, then they probably are pretty responsible people.

Hi Ron Aguilar Pets are important and keep many single and senior tenants company. Homes with pets are happier.

Hi Gene Riemenschneider I agree thatt would not be hard to prepare a resume with some computer skillls.

Hi Nathan Gesner You make a lot of good points and I have those same thoughts.

Hi David Popoff Tenants can be such bad renters especially if they are mad.

Hi Pat & Wayne Harriman Love your comments. I needed a chuckle and you gave it to me especially the skunk. My darling dog chased and caught a skunk a few years ago and my laundry room smelled skunky for weeks.

Hi Todd Anderson Yes, like Nathine said, "all pets are well-behaved" Hah!

Hi Lyn Sims I will have to look up your dog's blog. Love it!

Hi Althea Kippes, Esq. I am glad to know you have had a positive experience. Not all pet owners are bad but some just don't care since they don't own. Also people who work will leave their dogs inside all day due to no backyard or barking issues.

Hi Debra B Albert PA Team Albert, KW Port St. Lucie Isn't that the truth!

Hi Theresa Akin Brutus and Briget sound like my kind of dogs and are smart. I hate spiders and dogs that eat them can get sick or even worse die.

Hi Dama Scott I think that people who would go to the trouble of preparing a resume is someone who cares about the rental and will try to keep it clean and urine free.

Hi Marte Cliff Some people are so rude and uncaring. I am glad the situation worked out good and you have positive memories.

Hi Debra Peters I have a small chihuahua and when she becomes excited she barks until we can calm her down. Little dogs are barkers for the most part and can be ankle biters too.

Hi Marte Cliff

Some people do not have a love for animals and that is sad. I am sure you shocked him and I would love to have seen his face!

 Happy Earth Day!

Kristin ~ I'm sure the dna tests cost a fortune and are probably not in the purview of most renters!

Interesting resume...and helpful to landlords who allow pets which can be a real challenge.

Hi Nina Hollander

It just doesn't seem morally or ethically right to do DNA tests on dogs and their droppings!

Hi Sally K. & David L. Hanson

As real estate agents we can see the value but like others said too is that renters sometimes are alone and this is their only friend so there must be some affordable housing. I sold a nice condo and she was going to put different carpeting in it even though the current carpeting was not worn out. I said why don't you wait and just get it steam cleaned. So that is what she did and later before she moves in, she can get new flooring then.

I like it, the resume looks like a great tool in a competitive situation where companion animals are to be living in a rental.  Thank You for sharing it.

It does amaze me how many landlords want no pets, because most pet lovers I know can be more responsible and caring than people who dont have pets.

Hi Nancy Robinson

I am thinking it will become the thing of the future. I have read that some Property Managers make the tenants get an affidavit signed and notarized. Then they could sue in court if they lied. Not sure I would even swear my dog would 'NEVER'  potty on the floor.

Hi Annette Thor

I see the problem that many single widowed people have their pets for companionship and it would be hard for me to say NO. I guess that is why I just sell houses and do not handle leases.
