5 year diary 1937 facebook replaced

What a lovely picture.

This is a 1937 five-year diary that was started by my now-deceased mother-in-law.  She added things to it everyday.  She probably also kept it hidden so that little brothers or nosy sisters couldn't find it and read the private notations. The picture is taken on an aged oak desk top that is perhaps older than the diary.

Guess what?

I have been watching facebook and participating somewhat with pictures and opinions from time to time.  But I don't pour my heart out like I have observed others doing.  Folks will sometimes rant and rave about things that probably should just be in a private diary.  I feel like a little sis that stumbled upon a hidden diary!  So my observation is that facebook has taken over the private diary.

You may go back in a day or two and the rant will have been deleted but another guess what?  The rant is saved by using the little print screen tab and can be kept forever.

Did I ever keep a diary?  Yes, but I decided that I wouldn't want anyone in the future to read it so I destroyed it.  Too bad 'cause I'd sorta like to reread it!

Good Sunday morning Barbara S. Duncan -

Last year for some unknown reason my wife burned her diaries from the past 48 years!  I couldn't believe it.  I questioned her and she simply said it was time.  Maybe she's turned to FB?

John, I'll bet you gave your wife some really hard questioning as to why she burned the diary.  My guess is that she didn't want your kids to someday read them.

That diary has to be a treasure trove of private thoughts that provide insight into the life of your mother-in-law.  I mother did something similar, only on a smaller scale.  I sometimes enjoy reading her words.

There have been some notable diaries from the past that are treasured for the historical events captured.

I would like to know if some of the contributors to this blog kept diaries. You know who you are. I didn't keep a diary but I kept a journal of technical information. I found a really old record book at a flea market that I used.

I started this journal in February 1963 and treasure it for it's content.

Myrl, it was interesting.  It actually told about her year when she broke up with one boyfriend and married another boy who became the father of my husband.  My father-in-law was evidently so dashing and daring that he just stole her away.  I transcribed it and gave a copy to all the kids and grandkids.

Ok, Don, show us some content.   Got anything controversial like little brothers would want to read?

Barbara I had no siblings so no worries about sneaky readers. I'm afraid you would find my electronic scriblings boring.

I'm sure Anita's 40 year journal would have been an interesting read. My ex wrote notes on a calender daily. The family has those and there are some good comments the children enjoy reading about themselves. My daughter has the full set covering probably 20 years.  One interesting revelation to me was her daily weight when she was dieting.

Don, probably guys did not keep diarys as girls did.  I guess I can't think of any who did.  Anita must have had some spicy things in her diary that made her destroy them.  Her children would someday enjoy them just as your kids are doing now with their mom's diary.

There is no way in h..l I would let anyone read my journal. Having said that, it has solved many an argument down thru the years. But, also, no more.

Anita, one last word about your destroyed diary is that you probably kept your kids from writing a best-seller novel based on those diaries.  What a colorful character their mom had been would have made them all rich.  Now don't you feel bad???

I've never kept one in a book, though I do keep my thoughts on my laptop.  I'd hate to destroy a diary, because I'd like to go back to it at a later time, with a different view to consider/understand, maybe differntly with time giving new perspectives.

And yes..family would likely enjoy.  Not the 2015 version, but maybe the 1985 version.  These things need time, just like wine.
