Did you know that there has been an award winning vineyard at Sugarloaf Mountain since 2006 just on the edge of Montgomery County? The Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard opened for business in and has been winning awards ever since it began nine years ago. Sugarloaf grows five Bordeaux red grapes, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and three white grapes, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Viognier.
Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard ages its wine in French Oak barrels for one to two (or more) years depending on the vintage and the opinion of their winemaker. The only exception is the Pinot Grigio wine which is kept in stainless steel tanks to highlight the crisp taste one expects from a Pinot Grigio.
The vineyard has been recognized by state, regional and international organizations. So far nearly all their vintages have received awards! For example, the 2013 Chardonnay won 2014 Maryland Winemasters’ Choice Awards and the 2011 Comus won the same award for 2013!
