The siren song

Many parts of the country are subject to violent storms in the Spring. Whether it is hail storms, thunder storms, or even tornadoes, people living in these areas are trained by the media to watch the weather stations or listen to radios to keep informed of where these dangerous storms are. Here in the Atlanta, we have early warning sirens that blare when the weather turns dangerous. Early warning means minutes, or less.

These sirens are common place throughout the southern tier of the united states. I used to hear them every Summer in Des Moines Iowa when we visited my grand parents. They are great warning systems, as long as people don't get complacent and start to ignore these devices.

Are we as southern tier citizens paralyzed by fear every Spring when these storms start to appear? Nope. The odds of being in a dangerous storm are small to start with. We find that being weather conscious during the Spring can cut these odds even further. Be weather aware. Listen for that siren song and stay safe.

The only thing we have to look out for is monsoon storms that will begin to kick up in late July but we don't need sirens for that.

We have tsunami sirens here. They test them the last Friday of the month at 11 a.m.

We hear the whole day  emergency vehicles sirens. But those are usually car crashes, sick people, other private calls.
