The Invitation I Didn't Want

 

I received an an invitation to learn more about a new retirement community in my area.  As a Realtor, I thought it was a Broker Preview event.

 

There are a few Realtor publications that come to the house, so I didn't think much about it.

 

As I was reading the invitation, it hit me.  I realized that I received the invite not because I'm a Realtor, but because I am in the age range of their target market.

 

To me, the invitation was equal to an announcement that said:

 

Dear Jill,

You're old.

 

Well, that was horrifying.

Tammy Lankford - UGH.  Yes.  I get them and they go straight to the shredder.  

If I were to join an organization for "seniors", it would be AMAC or a similar one that's more aligned with my values.

I'm not going to lie....I'd be unhappy if I received membership cards from them, too.

You can still pretend it was just a broker preview invitation if you want.  I think they were just trying to bring some youth into the community!

Joe Petrowsky - I'm not too old to kick someone in the knee if I have to.  In my head, I'm pretty much a goofy twelve year old when I'm not a horrified future "senior".

Keep smiling and screw 'em is excellent advice.

Hi Jill, We get regular invites to events at the retirement home where my mother was living when she died 5 years ago. Now the funny part is we are more than qualified to live there agewise but hope I don't ever have to.

Oh those invitations aren't so bad now - wait a few years it gets WORSE!

I'm getting invitations to pick out a burial site or do I want to be cremated? I don't like to swear, but I feel like picking up the phone and telling them all to go to hell and leave me alone!!!

I'm like my grandmother was... I'd prefer to live among people younger than me because it makes you feel young.  When I've visited anyone in a 55+ community -- or worse, in an independent living facility -- all I see around me are people with medical issues and that look and feel old.  I don't want to live among that if I can help it.  I also agree with you regarding prefering AMAC over AARP (especially since AARP lobbied hard to pass Obamacare... I wouldn't let any of my money be used by a company that was in favor of that).

I live among at least one person younger than me; my husband.  I know what you mean about the people who you surround yourself with making you feel young.

AARP threw America under the bus.  Not one dime to them.  And no, I don't care about the discounts.  It's a stupid reason for giving your money to an organization that is against you.
