Earth Day - It has its Roots in Camas, WA

Time Magazines 1999 Hero of the Planet, Denis Hayes Found Inspiration in Camas

Denis HayesEarth Day founder, Denis Hayes was born in Wisconsin, but grew up the charming small town of Camas, Washington. His experiences growing up in the Pacific Northwest helped instill his  love of and appreciation for nature. His passion for protecting the environment came from witnessing the harm the local paper mill was doing, at that time, to the pristine environment, and its populace.

Camas sits at the mouth of the wild and scenic Columbia River Gorge. What a dichotomy to have the local employer spewing out toxins into the stunning landscape. To further confuse the matters, Hayes' father, and most of the men during that time, worked at the mill. Most of the locals tolerated the sulpher dioxide and other chemicals thrown off by the paper mill and called it, "the smell of money."

Pulp Mill Politics

Fortunately, times have changed. New Environmental Protection Agency "cluster" rules require pulp and paper mills to signifigantly reduce air and water emissions. Steam scrubbing systems now strip pollutants from the pulping process and incinerates them. In addition, the scrubber elminates 80 to 90 percent of the eggish smell notorious for mills.

More about Hayes and his Activism for the Earth

Hayes, an environmental activist and solar power proponent, rose to visibility in 1970 as the coordinator of the first Earth Day. He also founded the Earth Day Network, and in 1999, Time Magazine honored him with the title “Hero of the Planet.

Since 1992, Denis Hayes has been president of The Bullit Foundation in Seattle, Washington. He remains a leading advocate for environmental and energy policies, not only in the Pacific Northwest, but around the world.

Earth Day is here once again. It has grown into one of the most widely celebrated secular holidays in the world.  On April 22, 2015, let’s celebrate our planet, and pay homage to our local “Hero of the Planet.” Thank you Denis Hayes.

This short video was produced for Earth Day last year. The message is timeless.

Debb, this is a very interesting and personal angle of Earth Day with a connection to your very own Camas, WA!  I just love reading and learning about other parts of our country and the communities that make up our 50 states!

Debb, the guy who coined the phrase "Earth Day" was an ad guy from way-back-when. He came up with the phrase, "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking" and the Volkswagen short phrase, "Think Small", which he won AdMan of the year for, if I recall. I heard an interview about him and with him on NPR today. They wanted to name it Environmental Day or somesuch and he was, himself an avid environmentalist and took this project on to come up with a good, friendly name. They had MILLIONS take part the very first year--partly because of the terrific and easy name, "Earth Day". A couple of ones that were scrapped were E Day and Ecology Day. Glad they were! I'm sorry to say that I don't recall his name, but he lived to be 93 and this was truly one of his favorite things to have his grandchildren remember him for when he left this "earth"!

What a great video Debb.  Earth Day is very special in this house, given George's work with the Sierra Club.  We went to an Earth Day Film Festival and it was really terrific! Lots of humor and lots of things to ponder about the continuing struggle to teach communities the value of meaning of sustainability!

The original Earth Day was just a few days before I was born and has always been close to my heart. I worked with Denis Hayes for a few years at Green Seal and with Byron Kennard for a few years at Lisboa Associates. We kept Earth Day alive, in DC.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD So many have no clue of how much pollution the pulp and paper industry puts out in the waters and air. I have experienced it first-hand and the smell will gag most, let alow what it does to the fish, waterfowl and surounding areas. Great post!

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I remember the first EarthDay. It was celebrated in a big way at San Jose State, the year I graduated (1970).

As a matter-of-fact we thought of it as our Earth Day.
