The Choices You Won’t Regret Years From Now. . .

"I will never regret the things I’ve done.

But, I regret the things I didn’t do when I had the chance."

At the end of our journey, when your vehicle finally goes off the cliff. . we will not regret the things that we have done, as a matter fact, in those precious last minutes of life that  you may have left, we are not going to think about it . . .as much as the things we  really haven't done.

About  the relationships we were too afraid to have, those decisions that we didn't have guts to make,  the places we waited too long to visit. .on and on . . and now is too late.

Ricardo Semler is a Brazilian entrepreneur and during a Ted Talk presentation he pondered this very question.

What if your doctor tells you that you only have 6 months to live?

You are terminally ill and there is nothing they can do about it .

"Go home, get comfortable and die in 6 months"

I'm sure everyone one of us will react in a different way,

but the bottom line is all of us may end up with similar decisions..

I will love my family and I will enjoy them even more. .

I will be very nice to them.. even to everybody!

I will travel where I wanted to go and procrastinated for so many years

I will write a book

I will write a memoir for my children to have...

I will climb a mountain

I will explore land where tigers roam...

I will. . . . .. .

But what if?

If there is no terminal illness?

You are going to live anyways. .

Why do we have to wait for doctors orders. .

to finally do what you really want to do with your life?

What Ricardo Semler did next was brilliant . ..

He promise himself that Mondays and Thursdays from now on, he will act and pretend like he has 6 months to live. .

He propagated the same idea to his company and employees

And  now he talks around the things he already accomplished . .

his trips and adventures as he collects this memories...

To make sure that on his death bed. .

there will not be any regrets. .but just a smile.

Hi Fernando, my name is Kristie.  I enjoyed reading your post.  It's so true, we get caught up in our day to day things that we don't take time "to smell the roses"  When my best friend got really sick a few years ago from pancreatic cancer and sadly passed away, it pulled the rug out from under my feet.   I knew that I needed to get out of my comfort zone and make a difference in my life.  I've always thought that being a Realtor would be so neat, but I was scared.   I went back to school at 48, passed my tests and became a Realtor.  I'm so happy and proud that I did, even though I was so scared.   Sometimes you have to grab hold of life and let it take you were it will.  My life has changed so much and I am now so happy.  My best friend was my Mom.  If she had some bad apples, she'd make applesause.  Thank you

Fernando - Great inspirational post. Obviously there are limitations to everything, but I try to get the most out of every day. There are still things I want to do, so I need to get busy.

I had a "wake up call" about what was important a couple of decades ago.  I take chances and I take the time for family.

Fernando, this is a very inspirational post - and I was wondering the same thing about whether he and his employees go to work on Monday and Thursdays! Planning a family reunion like that with a lot of people, if you want everyone there, planning a year in advance is a good idea to give people time to make their vacation days work. Yes, life is very complicated for so many people who have very rigid job schedules.

Great point about living our lives to the fullest.  I think about how much time I put into the things that do not really matter.

I spend very little time on what if's or If I only or I should have...

We can't change the past...only learn from it.

If it deals with work and can make me better on down the road...I review it, absorb it,  and move on.

I don't have much time for reflection...my bucket list is way too long.

Very powerful Ted Talks!  I love listening to those and this one I'm sure is great.  Taking time to appreciate everything we have and not procrastinating about what we really want out of life is so important!

In 1997 I was told I had 8.5% chance of living. I'm still here. In 2008, my sister was told she had 6-12 months to live. She's still here!

I often tell others "Don't Die With Your Music Still in You." My car license reads LAFLOTS.

BTW...learn to quiet yourself and LISTEN to that Voice Within. You'll be amazed where it leads you.

This is excellent advice Fernando. I remember when my husband and I were told he had 24 hours or less to die. He lived a little longer than 24 hours but during that time while he was still alive I choked and nearly died. He was in the hospital bed while I was in ER. He never knew it. You're right, I didn't think about the things that didn't matter. In the end I wanted to live.
