Barbara's Blog - When Looking for A House Online

Looking for a home can be time consuming. So to make it a little easier, many people turn to the internet for information. The internet can be a huge help, but there are a few things you should before starting an internet search.

  • Don’t always believe what you see. Be wary of online listings with no or very few photos, there is a reason why – usually that the property is in bad condition.  Even when there are photos, be cautious, it’s the listing agents job to present the property in the best light to get buyers interested
  • Read between the lines.  Phrases like “needs some TLC” or “has potential” usually means the house is in need of repair and probably more repairs than you may think.  You have to think that if the house was not in need of major repairs, these phrases would not be mentioned. The description would instead highlight the house’s positive attributes
  • Sometimes the information about homes online is not updated on a regular basis.  A home you are interested in could be listed as active, but it may already be under contract.  The selling agent could have updated the information, but it has not been refreshed or updated by the site administration.  Either way you may not be seeing the most accurate information on the home you are interested in.
  • Be careful when registering on websites to get more information on properties. Some sites require you to register to get more detailed information. They may, depending on the site, sell your contact information.  You may start getting calls from random agents who now have your information.  That might be a plus, you can interview the agents to find the right one for you. Just know that your info is now out there and the calls may not stop once you find a house.
