Crime Alert in Colorado (Open Houses)

The following is reprinted (with permission) from the Colorado Real Estate Commission's Newsletter.  I thought this could/should apply anywhere.

Crime Alert - Denver police report burglaries of listed homes after holding an open house

The Division of Real Estate has been made aware of criminal activities taking place at open houses listed for sale.   The Denver Police Department has received reports of homes listed for sale being burglarized over the last couple of weeks.  All the homes involved had held an open house and were later burglarized.  Thieves are attending the open house during the day and scouting out ways to gain access; later returning and burglarizing the home. This is an important reminder to take extra precautions with homes you are listing and opening up to the public.  Law enforcement recommends developing a good process for checking and ensuring all access points to the home are secured.  Denver Police are urging everyone to be on the lookout for anything that seems suspicious at homes listed for sale.  If you see suspicious activity or a home that looks like it may have been burglarized, please contact the Denver Police Department through its non-emergency number at (720) 913-2000.

John, there seems to be a growing problem with this. We've had 3 Realtors attacked at Open House here in Arizona this year.  I never let my Team go out alone for Property Inspections or for Open Houses, and there are strict rules and tips.

Good Friday morning Realtor John G Johnston. It seems our world is just getting crazier and crazier.  Thugs, thieves and worse walk among us and we have to keep our eyes opened and be on guard at all times.  So sad.

Here's hoping our state will follow suit and make safety a required CE course.  Thanks for commenting Bob "RealMan" Timm

It is sad that greed is more important than life to some people.  Enjoy your day my friends John McCormack

Sad times with people doing this. The burglars better watch out, they can get shot if caught in the house. I think they forget that part.

John, and my other AR Family, it was just on FOX 10 News yesterday that in Phoenix, AZ a Realtor had been confronted at gunpoint. It even took place in what appeared to be a really decent Neighborhood. The Realtor did get away and called Police, the sad result is the Man hiding in the Garage with a Gun ended up having to be killed by the Police. It was a dangerous standoff, and we will never no why he was there, but I am glad to report the Realtor was able to get away fast and safe. We can never be too careful. Always approach your Listings on high alert, like the Realtor in Phoenix did, which enabled his chance to flee!

Life has changed since my childhood in the 50's.  As long as I was within my mother's voice I was OK.  She yelled...I came home.  Enjoy your evening Tamra Lee Ulmer ...and be safe!
