Look What My Daughter Brought Home . . . .

So yesterday (as a matter of fact this week) was incredibly busy. I have been busy taking care of clients. My daughters are on spring break this week. Yesterday my 11 year old went to a beach party all day, and called me on her way home "Mom, can I have a bunny?" I replied no, we already have a dog and do not  need any more animals.

I dropped flyer's off at a client's house, got home at about 6:45 pm only to find my daughter with her new pet. She brought home "Cocoa" and asked if we could keep her. Somehow she managed to obtain a cage for her new pet too!!!

I don't really have a yard, and really no place to keep it. However when I was her age I remember bringing home a puppy that I had found - so I guess she is like me.

Anyway, I think I am going to Newport Feed and Grain today to find out how to care for the bunny, and where we are going to keep it.

The only caveat is Patrick (my Irish Setter). Now Patrick is very intrigued with this bunny, and I think that he thinks it is a cat. The cats all antagonize him here by just standing just beyond his reach through the fence, or on top of the fence. And now, we have a bunny in the house that he thinks is a cat . . .
We will see how this all plays out . . .
What has your child brought home?

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww how cute!!! If you don't keep it, I want it! :)

I was always the one bringing home fluffy things too.  Luckily (I guess), my son does not have an affinity for animals, so I doubt he'll ever bring one home.  Now rocks on the other hand....

Chris - thanks for the response. My dog is treating it like a cat . . . and the bunny is afraid of him. Thats cool that your rabbit was able to run around the house with the other animals. Can you keep them outside in a pen? It is kind of cool (and windy) where I live, and I do worry about the other animals - skunks, possums, racoons. Do they adapt?

Sheree - I'll let you know if it doesn't work out and you can have them. They were "selling" or giving them away yesterday on the boardwalk here, and my daughter brought him/her home on her bike.

It's not the safest for the bunny.  I know some people do, but they make great indoor pets if you are up to it.

Sharon- What a cute bunny, and Patrick is a beautiful dog! My son brings home odd things, when he was in 4th grade he found a dead chipmunk and brought it to school, he put it in his locker to take home later. Little did he know they were having locker check that day. His teacher got the surprise of her life when she opened it! Ha! ::::shakes head:::: boys..

Ohh - that is about the cutest thing I have ever seen. I had a bunny when I was a child. It had a big hutch outside (Florida) and it lived happily for many years. We would take it carrots and lettuce in addition to the rabbit feed that my mother bought. But, I think it is probably better to keep them inside . . . they have to be handled a lot to stay tame. This looks like a small rabbit so perhaps it will not grow too large!

My son has brought home all sorts of animals. Cats, dogs and lots of turtles - box turtles, gophers and even a snapping turtle one time (what an unattractive creature!).

cONGRATULATIONS!! That bunny is too cute.  I had a brown one when I was young, I used to play with it all the time.  We kept bunnies outside in rabbit hutches, specifically designed to protect them...

Robin - thanks for writing. I'm still working this out.

Patrice - she is adorable, and very friendly. My daughter was carrying her around yesterday in a basket.

I think that Patrick might be getting his feelings hurt because everyone is commenting on the bunny, so I would like to say what a handsome dog I think Patrick is. :)

Steve - Patrick probably is, however I did take him for a long walk and swim at the beach yesterday. He is intrigued by it, and is now laying outside my daughter's door as he wants to see the bunny!

That bunny is so darn cute I can hardly stand it.  I keep coming back to l ook again!  Did they give you plenty of advice about feeding & care at the pet store?  I've recently had to learn a lot about bunnies with mine having issues in the past couple months, so if you need any help I probably have the info.  :  )

How are Irish Setters as a breed?  I've always thought they were beautiful, but I like to hear from actual owners about temperament, etc.

Thanks!  Chris

Chris - thanks for writing back. Yes they gave a care sheet, but the bunny did not come from the pet store as my daughter got it from someone selling them from her home on the boardwalk at the beach - interesting location. I will definitely stay in contact with you for sure, as it is new for me.

My dog seems to be leaving it alone for now, but I have been walking him so he won't focus so much on it. Setters are really sweet dogs. They are known for their immaturity - which I find amusing - he still carries around stuffed animals. But he is very loving and sweet. And much to everyone dismay - he is very intelligent, He knows how to open doors in the house, and understands certain words (regardless of the intonation and content). Their temperment is good overall.

I grew up with setters and have owned about six myself. It is heart wrenching when you lose one. It would be great if they could learn to be together - but he does like to play!! So - we will have to see - and in fact my daughter understands that as well and wants to do the right thing for the bunny!

Thanks again for writing!

Sharon, Patrick looks highly disturbed that he is not now the center of attention with the new kid on the block (the bunny). Keep it all in stride and have fun with your pets.

Patrick was disturbed and intense!! We returned the bunny (sniff sniff) she was sooooooo cute, but just not a good fit here. My daughter came to this revelation on her own. But we thought she was adorable!

Sharon, I know with bunnies (rabbits) they do grow bigger and typically you have to build a hutch outside for them and feed them properly. Not always an easy task, so you probably made the right move. It's cool your daughter got through the thought process on this. Must have that good common sense like Mama : )

The universe is all right again, and Patrick is again at peace!

Kat - thanks - the bunny was very cute. My daughter wanted to return her as she knew Patrick was not happy with it here.

Debbie - it was a challenge keeping those two apart.

Christina - I would have liked to have kept it, however it wasn't really fair to the bunny or my dog. I heard they can learn to go potty in a litter box.
