Battery Power for Your Home

Tesla-expanding from car batteries to home batteries

Tesla Motors announced this week they are creating residential and business battery systems. The Powerwall Home Battery is being marketed as a way to wean us off of oil and gas. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the system could help home buyers who want to store solar power and/or live off the grid. In fact, the Powerwall Home battery could connect people living in remote parts of the world to power.

Tesla is not the first to test alternative power. Facebook is testing solar powered drones

that bring internet to off-the-grid places. Home buyers looking to save money on their electric bills may be the first to test out the Powerwall Home Battery system. At the Tesla news conference, they showed off home batteries that can be wall mounted and placed in several rooms within a house.

Powerwall production is underway right now with the product going on sale later this year in the United States. According to Twitter #TeslaEnergy, the batteries are already being pre-ordered with a starting price tag of $3000 dollars. Tesla expects to offer international sales next year.

How Does the Powerwall Home System Work?

The complete system will sell for $3500 and function much like the technology in Tesla's electric cars. Elon Musk says Tesla cars are known for having the longest range per car of any vehicles being built at this time. The home batteries will have 10 kilowatt-hour batteries.

We cannot count on fossil fuel for the future

Battery power for homes could be one of a handful of alternative power sources. How will this impact home buyers? There are tax rebates offered to home owners who install solar roof panels. In Montgomery County Maryland, officials offer a free energy audit to residents. It's a county wide effort to find more effective ways to get power to homes and businesses.

Very cool stuff Sandy Padula and Norm Padula. It's a positive move for consumers too. I would love to see power lines and poles go away-they are so ugly.

Troy Erikson, we have home buyers who talkwith us about alternative energy. I think people are coming around to the idea that we have to find other ways to heat & cool our homes and businesses.

Have a great weekend

10 Kilowatt hours is not much. $3500? 1,000 watts for 10 hours, then how do you recharge the battery?  Many people already live off the grid using solar panels and 12 V batteries. I have had solar panels on my roof since the 1980s.

Hi Jerry Lucas, from what I read on the Tesla website, the battery can recharge using solar panels. You can also double up batteries. I think it's marketed as an alternative to generators used when there are power outages.

It  is pricey but a lot quieter than the gas powered generators.

Have a good weekend!
