Will you know when to stop driving?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with WHISPERING PINES REALTY 20398180

As we age, our driving skills diminish...we may not think so but they do.

We see this all the time.

I am really scarred when I see the driver get out and they can  hardly walk.

I wonder who do they hit the brake fast when they need to.

But, I think this illustration should be helpful...

William, I can only say "I hope so." But it is a problem, my elderly sister and a good friend in her late 60's were both hit by elderly drivers who were confused.

Hi William, Yikes! This is a very scarey thing.  We still need to find a way to remedy this situation.

Good morning, William!  Taking away a person's license to drive can definitely limit their ability to get around freely.  However, if they are no longer able to drive safely they do not need to be behind the wheel of a car.  Perhaps, more emphasize on providing more affordable public transportation would be a start in remedying this situation.

Welcome to our World Bill. As I've aged my vision keeps getting trickier to resolve with a proper prescription. My solution will be to travel the beach road, A1A, at 25mph and hope for the best. A companion dog looks like a good idea too!

William, no one wants to let go of their freedom.  That is understandable. However, I feel the State needs to be more proactive in renewing driver licenses with aging drivers.  I walked into my local pet store the other day only to find the front window boarded up. An elderly client hit the gas instead of the brake as she was parking in front of the store.  Thankfully, no one was hurt.  Now, I wonder if that will be reported and if her license will be revoked.  Great photo ... so fitting for what happened at the pet store.

Funny photo - but serious subject. When we lived in Arizona one winter we came across a really horrible wreck. An elderly couple were traveling with their pickup and a camper on the back. They were in the right lane on a 2-lane highway when they decided to make a left turn - right in front of a huge truck carrying a load of cars.

What was left of their pickup and camper was only about 3' tall...

Of course, you don't have to be elderly to do something stupid. One of our local cops tried a U-turn in front of an oncoming truck a few months ago. He'll survive - and he's already a hero for being injured. I keep wondering who gets to pay to repair the truck - and for counseling for its driver.

What an amusing photo William. I took the car away from my father when he was about 85 after my mother could not do it. When I insisted, he proclaimed that I was responsible for driving him around and taking care of his personal business. I did it and drove him home from work until one day before he left us last October. I cherish the time I had with Dad, we had great conversations. I could start crying right now writing about this.

Safety has to be the primary concern.  Period.

William - You have hit on a VERY important topic!  In my own neighborhood last year we had this issue come up.  The 93 year old guy that lived across the street didn't see an issue with his driving.  Yet, he was regularly bumping into things, and was clearly dangerous.  Finally, the problem resolved itself. . .He died!  Yet, we have a lady down at the opposite end of our street who is approaching the same age.  She is sharp as a tack, quick with her reflexes and is an excellent driver.

Your title line imposes an important question!  CONGRATULATIONS on having this blog FEATURED in the Feather Nesters group!

William

Yes it's a bit scary to see someone get out of a car . . . . that is having a hard time walking and can't see well.

Good luck and success.

How about an over 70 lane? =:o) In all seriousness, losing the ability to drive is a big step in the loss of independence that we all so revere
