How to Establish a Routine

Want to take control of your time and get more done? Create a routine. A routine is defined as “a prescribed, detailed course of action to be followed regularly.” Now, that doesn’t sound very exciting, but no matter how spontaneous we like to think we are, we’re creatures of habit and routine. You may say, “I could never follow a routine! I thrive on spontaneity and doing something different every day!” The reality is, you probably follow a routine and don’t even know it. Chances are you brush your teeth the same way every day, put on your pants with the same leg first, etc.

Getting into a good routine can help you stay on track to reach your goals and achieve success. Here’s how to establish a routine that will help you succeed.

Replace some of your bad routines with good ones. This isn’t an all or nothing prospect. Perfection isn’t essential. By replacing some of your bad routines with good ones, you’re more likely to stick to them. Instead of spacing out in front of the television after work for a Real Housewives marathon of episodes that you’ve already seen, read a book or work out until the newest episode airs. Or, tape it to watch it commercial-free later.

Automate. A routine is much easier to stick with when you don’t have to think about it. Try to automate your life as much as you can. The less thought you have to put into the basic, everyday tasks, the more energy you’ll have to make the choices that will help to drive your business.

Prioritize your day. What HAS TO get done today? Pinpoint the tasks that are most important and focus on getting them done, instead of becoming side-tracked by smaller, less important tasks on your to-do list. It’s not important to cross off every task on your to-do list; however, it is important to complete the most important items on it.

Stick to a schedule. Create a detailed schedule each and every day. A schedule helps you complete the most important tasks on your to-do list and ensures that you don’t waste time. Of course, be flexible in case an emergency arises; however, try to stick to it as much as possible.

Hello Laura,  I am good at sticking to a schedule and I do start each morning with a list, I just need to get some free time for golf!

Some days, I think if my schedule had more wiggle room and had a few less items on it, I'd have a better completion ratio.
