 How to be Approachable


  1. Have a clean professional appearance. Where appropriate clothing, style your hair and have fresh breath. It is said that you get sized up by the person you meet within 10 seconds of making eye contact. Appearance in this sense is everything.
  2. Expressions. Walk tall and open your shoulders. Be confident in who you are and why someone should talk to you. Smile as your walking up to someone and reach out to shake a hand. Give a compliment as well. This breaks down the walls and opens up the conversation.
  3. Get Personal. We all want and need things to happen, but a relationship has to take place first in order to get that. Ask questions, get to know who you are talking to, and establish rapport. Once the rapport is there, its a great time to ask for business or referrals.

Great advice for all of us, Chris Mamone.  I do think that sometimes agents think we Lenders are going to "trap" them by asking them for business.  Developing relationships first seems most appropriate in these types of situations ... JMO.  And having fresh breath, of course ...

I choose to be a little more casual than most agents, but it's common in my market where we sell lake homes in a rural area, but I certainly think I'm very approachable.
