12th Annual Hotchkiss Sheep Dog Trial Information
It's really all about the dogs. There are a lot of other events planned in conjunction with the sheep dog trials, but the dogs take center stage on this particular weekend. This year's event is on May 8th and runs through the 10th. You can find out more information here. It all takes place at East Hotchkiss Ave and 2nd St.
While at the trials you will also find vendors with locally make products and food. Check out the other demonstrations going on. Doug Hamilton will probably be the head sheep sheerer this year just like he has been in the past.
The dogs are amazing and extremely skilled. Here's an excerpt from the event's website:
We invite you to be our GUEST and witness truly one of the greatest and most dynamic working partnerships. A DOG, A HANDLER and the STOCK (in this case the SHEEP). With just a few well timed whistles - the dog takes charge of the sheep and completes the assigned task. It is important to note that the dogs are trained but the sheep are not!!
The official name is the Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trails, but the locals just call it the sheep dog trials. It's difficult to believe this event is in it's 12th year. It's very popular and draws a big crowd to this rural area.
Check around town for the other planned events like the car show and community yard sale.
I hope you enjoy this video from the 2013 trials. It shows one of the dogs at work and a bit of the other demonstrations that took place.
