Have you ever seen a Maypole dance? Haiku Maui has one.
We were lucky to be invited to a neighbor's Mayday celebration over the weekend, where they had their 10th annual Maypole dance on a beautiful sunny day in Haiku Maui.
They had a huge pole of bamboo placed into a hole in the yard, with many colorful ribbons attached at the top. Each participant holds a ribbon as they dance around the pole in 2 directions, weaving in and out of each other. An array of hand drummers beat out the time during the process which took well over half an hour. As the ribbons weave together they get shorter and shorter and the dancers get closer together around the central pole, to the point where it's no longer possible to keep going.
The ribbons are tied off, resulting in a nicely decorated pole, and lots of happy dancers who can now take a break.
What a fun way to celebrate spring, and all the good things about life in Haiku Maui. Some people really know how to bring a community together! The potluck food was fabulous and plentiful, and everyone was having a good time. This was a private event so I won't give out too many details.
