FAQ – Can we add an outlet in this wall?

As a long time General Contractor in California there a some questions that seem to come up a lot. Many of the questions happen when I first come to give a free estimate for home improvements in Sacramento. The questions can be vary and the answers will depend on their situation.

A common question is, Can we add an outlet in this wall?

This may be a simple question but more will need to be known to give the correct answer. If it is just a matter of adding an outlet that requires minimal power, it will probably be okay. There are many reasons why adding is a bit more involved.

Here are a few examples:

Some outlets need to be a dedicated circuit; microwaves, disposals, and pumps are examples. These will require a new circuit going back to the panel, not shared with anything else.

Older homes are often already overloaded. 40 – 50 years ago the electrical needs were small, we have loaded up outlets to dangerous levels. Adding more plugs does not solve the load requirements.

If the new outlet is outside, it will require special grounding. A safe source of power will need to be found and will vary with each home.

As a general rule, you can always add an outlet. The question becomes, Is it worth it to you? The best way to find out is to ask a contractor who is at the site, he will be able to assess the situation best and give you an idea as to what is involved and how much it would cost.

In Sacramento, Tromler Construction may be able to help you in solving your electrical needs. Call with any of your electrical questions.

This is an interesting question when the home owner discovers that the power company has insufficient power from the street supply to the house.

This is not unusual in older urban communities.

Seems like an easy enough request, but I appreciate your explanation as to why it may not be so easy to do.

Many are forced to consider upgrading the panel and supply line from the street Lenn Harley . This can be expensive but what a difference it can mean to the home.

Tom.  I mentioned it because I had such a sale.  Our buyer wanted the panel box upgraded from 100v to 200v but the county first had to run a line from the street.

We got a good price.

I use dedicated circuits for my computer back-ups too just to be safe. Gone are the days when you just piggy-back on any old receptacle; our electrical equipment is simply too sensitive.
