I Fought the Tree and the Tree Won

I had open house planned for last Saturday, but the seller wanted a break and I was happy to take the day off.  A day off!  I was very excited.

My husband and I were off to do errands, one of which was to buy a new tree saw.  I wanted two of our giant Bird of Paradise trees cut down.

Here was the plan:

My husband would cut the tree and I'd guide it to the ground.

Here's what happened:

The tree was heavier than I thought it would be, so when I tried to catch it, it fell on my head and knocked me on my butt.

Hello concussion.

So the rest of my weekend was spent in bed recovering and trying shake the headache, the earache and the brain fog.  It's better today and I expect it to be better tomorrow.

This is one of those rare occasions that a day off was more dangerous than hosting an open house.  Who would have thought?!

This won't sour me on taking a day off, though.  I'll try it again for sure.  Maybe next time with a safety helmet.

Pete X with X Group Real Estate Advocates, Huntington Beach, CA 714.459.2017 OCLister.com - Yep!  Doing dumb stuff can certainly create a dangerous day off.  I'm glad to be recovering, as the alternative would be a bummer.

Thanks Rob Thomas - You have a great week, too!

Silvia Dukes PA, REALTOR, CRS, CIPS, SRES - I was kidding about the helmet.  No helmets for me, but delegating is in my future.

So sorry JIll, it is hard to estimate the weight of a large tree. At least you were not hurt in a worse way.

Oh, yeah... I'm not surprised it weighed more than you thought.  The first time we tried to cut one of these down on our property we had to do it little by little.  Bird of Paradise trees / Traveler's Palms are very heavy... the palm fronds hold a lot of water.

John Novak - If a tree falls on my head, would I make a noise when it hits me?  I can answer that.

I've mostly emerged from the fog and am feeling better.  Thanks.

Noah Seidenberg - Suddenly, it has become much easier to estimate the weight of a tree.  All of them weigh too much for me to consider another catch attempt.

S. Leanne Paynter ☼ Broward County, FL - The tree was a bit taller than the roof line of the first story of our house.  I didn't think it was a big deal and was totally wrong.

P.S. I love Traveler's Palms!

Wow! I'm sure you're thankful that it was just a concussion that you were able to walk away from. I have a lot of respect for people who work in that industry.

It's safe to say that your super power is not super human strength! Glad to hear you are ok!! When I read your blog I pictured several "fail" videos from youtube and had to chuckle...because I can see my husband and myself doing the same thing! Have a great weekend Jill : )

One of the more dangerous aspects of trying to cut down a tree yourself is that it can fall in an unexpected direction - like on your head, your car, or your house!

And we wonder why tree surgeons charge what they do.

I sure hope you have medical advise about your head injury.  A bruised head is not the same as a bruised arm or leg.

Hope you are ok.  It is easy to overestimate just how heavy those darn trees are.

Wow, that didn't go too well! Next time, he might be better off just yelling "TIMBERRRRR" and everyone can just get out of the way.

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better.

Sorry to hear that happened. Hope you are ok. Accidents can happen from doing home projects. I agree with Lenn, you might want to see a doctor about it.

Big tree cutting is a dangerous job.

Once I passed a good investment deal because the 90+ year old tree on the sidewalk was ~6 ft in diameter and pushed up the side walk concrete making it dangerous to walk on.  The cost of removal -sidewalk concrete ranged from $7-28K.  The tree was about 4 story tall. I had to pay removal on top of it.

Oh no! I hope that this heals quickly for you. Nothing worse than having to spend your day off nursing pain from an accident!

Hope this weekend is a less painful one!  This is the first time I've ever heard of a bird of paradise attacking someone though.

Richard Iarossi - I'd call it more of a stumble than a walk away.

Mandi Null - You're spot on about the lack of super power strength.  Super stupid is what it was.  I'm glad to know my husband and I are not alone.  You'll have to write a blog about it when you and husband have a misguided "adventure" such as mine.

Brian Schulman - You're so right!  Unfortunately I was bright enough to intentionally stand right in the direction of the fall.  Giant Bird of Paradise are heavier than they appear.

Lenn Harley - It really didn't seem like a big tree, but now I see the value of hiring a professional more clearly.  You make a good point about consulting a doctor.

Thanks Rob Arnold - I'm okay.  I certainly underestimated the weight of that darned tree.

Kat Palmiotti - That is excellent advice.  I'll take it!
