Cell Phone Safety Tips That Save Lives

OK, so everyone loves talking on their cell phones but did you know that doing it can be hazardous to your health?  No, I'm not talking about the news reports you have heard in the past that associate cell phone usage with brain tumors.  I'm referring to the injuries that can result from talking on the cell phone while driving! There's no doubt about it, it's DANGEROUS!

How many times have you seen another driver start to drift into another lane of traffic (maybe yours) and then when you look over at them what do you see?  You got it, a cell phone! They are more interested in their conversation than in obeying the rules of the road.  Hard to believe, but cutting that big business deal or asking their spouse what to pick up at the grocery store becomes more important at that moment than their own safety.

Can you get a ticket in Albuquerque, NM for talking on a cell phone while driving, you ask? YES!   Many countries, as well as many cities such as Albuquerque and states across America, have made it illegal to talk on a hand-held cell phone while driving.  In states like NM where there is no law against holding a cell phone while driving, police officers can ticket you for unsafe driving.  In other words, if you are doing something other than driving while driving (holding a cell phone, putting on lipstick, reading a map or book, etc.) and you are driving unsafely as a result of such activities, you may receive a ticket.

To make your day a little safer and your life a little easier, here are some cell phone safety tips:

Try to place calls while your vehicle is stationary.

Use a "hands-free" or speaker phone accessory (these are available for most if not all hand-held cell phones).  Not only does this allow you to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, but using a hands-free kit keeps the phone further from your head reducing exposure to the alleged tumor-causing radiation.

Never read or write text messages while driving. Taking your eyes off the road for a second or two can result in a collision. Pull over to the side of the road if you must text.

The program frequently called numbers into your phone's memory allowing you to keep dialing to a minimum.

Never read or write while the car is moving.  If you must write a note or take down a phone number during a conversation, PULL OVER!

Make sure your phone is within easy reach while driving.

Be careful when pulling over to place calls. To avoid being a crime victim, do not stop in dangerous areas and keep your car doors locked.

If your phone is connected to your car's power source, disconnect your phone before using jumper cables.  The power surge could damage your phone.

Make sure 911 is programmed into your phone's memory should you need to report an accident or other emergencies.

Hi John,

EXCELLENT tips!  I ONLY answer or make calls in the car using the vehicle's bluetooth.  It's so much easier and I can concentrate on the road.

Hello, everyone and thanks for dropping by and checking out the post on cell phone safety.

Cell phones are awesome but can become a dangerous weapon when used while driving. We at Albuquerque Homes Realty really hope the next time you get a call or text while driving you either don't take it or pull over to before getting on your phone. No call or text is worth a life.

Take care and again we appreciate you.

I'm aware that I'm simply a bad driver when I'm on the phone- especially when dealing with detail oriented conversations. It's easy enough to avoid it altogether.

If I were a betting man, and I am, I would place a bet that nearly, if not all, here have made that abd choice at least once if not many times more.

That doesnt make it right but we all can learn from this

So very true Morgan Evans !

Texting and walking can be very dangerous. A friend of mine has a daughter that had to go to the Emergency Room and she received stitches because she was texting while walking, and she walked right into a metal sign.

There are too many fatalities due to texting and driving.

WE ALL SURVIVED WHEN CELL PHONES DID NOT EXIST.

Maybe the best blog or question I've seen on activerain... This one post may save someone's life... I will admit I used to talk, text, etc while driving... I truly thought I did it only when it was "safe"... That's ridiculous!  I had an accident, my fault, from texting while driving... Luckily, no one was injured... I learned the hard way... PLEASE don't do it and pass the word... I see people texting while driving all the time... IT IS KILLING PEOPLE!  Thanks for this posting!!!

Hi John, These are all great tips!

There is an app out there that I would especially encourage parents to install on their teenage driver's cell phones. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the ap at this moment, but the basic premise is that the phone goes onto "airplane" mode while you drive. It halts all incoming calls and texts while a car is in motion and automatically texts the incoming caller that "I am driving right now and will call you back when I stop." I like this concept because it eliminates that urge to answer incoming calls/texts until you have come to a stop.

Good points John.  Sometimes the best thing that can happen to me is that I leave my cell phone in my bag in the back seat.  Can't text and drive that's for sure.

John,

It is so obvious when someone is doing that while driving.  We always change lanes, and yes you can get a ticket here for that too.  However, many are oblivious to that rule.

Even though we have bluetooth, and programmed numbers in the car, we still don't like talking on the phone and driving.  If it is a call where I need to concentrate, I usually pull over and stop to focus on the conversation.  If we both are in the car, that makes it simpler, so we can keep moving.  A

Unfortunately these "texting while driving" accidents are getting all too common. Makes me crazy when I see someone drive by me while looking at their phone!

That is great advice John.  I am pleased to see that NM lumps putting on lipstick with holding a cell phone.  So many states limit the use of cell phones but reading the paper in rush hour traffic is ok.  (I'm talking about CT, the armpit of New England)

Too many tragic accidents have happened because of that "split second" look.  Cell phones - talking and texting while driving - is no better than drunk driving and I pray that the police crack down on this.

Still recall two beautiful high school friends in the same obituary column in the daily newspaper. School let out and the two girls were in the vehicle driving the rolling hills behind the High School.  While texting, the driver lost control and they rolled into the ravine. So sad.
