How Does Your Garden Grow?

Are you a "Gardening Aficionado" or a "Weekend Warrior"? I'm the latter. I do what I can, when I can and I rely on the professionals and experts with the rest. The weather in the Denver Metro area can still be unpredictable, even in May, so we typically wait until after Mother's Day to plant just about anything. That was a GREAT plan this year...we had SNOW on Mother's Day!

The temperatures are creeping back up gradually and the over night lows are fairly mild, so it might be "safe" to start planting this weekend! We like to do containter gardening with lots of flowers. Typically we'll have some geraniums, petunias and whatever else we might find that's colorful and easy to care for.

Soon will be visiting our local nurseries and home improvement stores to pick up out our "pretties". We like to visit Tagawa Gardens in Centennial, just a few miles from our home. The staff there is friendly and knowledgeable, and we always find what we need.

What does you garden look like? Do you have rose bushes or lilacs? Perhap you have window boxes, or raised gardens in your back yard. We all do what we enjoy and what looks nice in our landscaping. Some of us maintain the lawn, trees and the like ourselves, others hire a service. No matter. It all works, right?!

When I lived in Canada, the rule was, never plant your garden before the May 24th long weekend.  That's probably a good rule in your area too.  I hope you have a good season and get a bountiful garden this summer!

Here on Maui we are lucky enough to grow a veggie garden all year long, though in the really wet months it can be challenging.

Donna - other than the perennials my garden has not been started.  Looks like this Saturday, however.

Nancy, I generally do ok with outdoor plants, but I have a black thumb when it comes to the indoor ones!

Tammy, we'd love to have a vegetable garden, but we have to many critters wandering our yard!

Sharon, guess we'll both be shopping this weekend!

Roy, we have some lilacs that are blooming, but we need more color!

Kathleen, that's a really bummer. Do you have botanical gardens or places to visit near your home?

Georgie, I'm jealous of your veggie garden!

Grant, there will be a few of us out this weekend!

Hi Donna, I planted 2-3 weeks ago which is early for me. In fact I checked and my tomato plants have 4 small tomatoes. I planted them in a mixture of top soil, humus and manure and they are loveing it. I bought very small containers and one of plants is already 30" tall. Everything is thriving.

Donna, I planted a few things about a month ago, and a few more about two weeks ago thinking our weather would be warmer.   It is going slow, but have been eating radishes for a couple of weeks now.

I like to water my flowers, but when it comes to planning and planting, I leave it to the landscaper.  One of these days, I will have a veggie garden, but not until I can stay on top of it.

Hi Donna! The weather was crazy down here in Texas too. After a month's worth of May's rain and tornadoes everything turned green and growing. The humidity has been something to contend with. This is not something I'm accustomed to experiencing in Texas. But flowers are now growing. Many drowned and the ones that survived I cherish.

A month has past since you wrote this post. I hope you're enjoying spring and a beautiful summer is right around the corner. I love flowers, green grass, the trees, just about everything in nature. I hope you're having a good season in real estate too!

Chris Ann Cleland ~We usually have potted flowers but haven't found the time to get them planted this year. The next 2 weeks are busy, not sure if we'll ever get around to it!

Larry Johnston ~We do the shopping, I do the arranging and the planting, then Rich does most of the watering.
