How to Delegate Your Weaknesses

What are your weaknesses? If you’re like many people, you can identify them in seconds. After all, it’s much easier to identify what we’re not good at than identify our strengths. While experts may advocate working to turn your weaknesses into strengths, chances are, doing so would be a waste of time and would take away from the time you could spend focusing on and sharpening your strengths.

Instead, delegate your weakness. When you delegate, you free your time to focus on your strengths and generate leads for your business. Here are five tips to help you delegate your weaknesses.

1. Identify your weaknesses. Write down your weaknesses. We all have them. Once you identify and acknowledge what they are, you can move forward and find someone who finds that those traits are strengths.

2. Systemize. When you systemize things, you help to ensure that they’re done right and the way you want them. You give the person you’re delegating tasks to a guideline of what needs to be done and outline your expectations for the task. This clears up and helps to prevent any miscommunication.

3. Find someone who finds your weakness a strength. Find someone whose strengths closely match your weaknesses. For example, if organization is a weakness, hire an assistant to organize paperwork, send out the monthly mailings and otherwise keep your office running smoothly. If finances aren’t your forte, hire an accountant to manage your money and keep you on track.

4. Stay involved. Just because you delegate it doesn’t mean that you should take a hands-off approach. It’s important to stay involved to ensure that things are done correctly and to your satisfaction and to ensure that there are no shenanigans. Remember, it’s still up to you to complete your lead generating activities.

However, resist the urge to tell the people who you delegated tasks to how to do the tasks. While it is necessary initially to give the person a set of guidelines or instructions of what should be done and how it should be completed, they’ll naturally develop their own process over time, and that’s okay. As long as the end result is the same and you’re kept in the loop, give them the freedom to do their jobs.

5. Practice discipline. Jim Rohn said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” Just because you’re delegating tasks to others doesn’t mean you can let your other tasks slip. Run a tighter ship.. don't get comfortable and compete with yourself to rise above, finding time wasted to make better use of it. Real estate is a sport, some say addiction.

I know it makes sense to focus on core competencies and delegate other tasks.  But, I also like to learn and develop new skills to keep things interesting.  So, I am not as productive as I could be.  I should think about outsourcing more tasks.

Great tips! I agree, espeically with delgating. My marketing manager Michelle does everything in or office like clockwork. Since delegating tasks to her over the past 1.5 years I have found that my office runs so much more smoothly. Thanks for sharing.

Laura Foreman I love this post because I am a FIRM believer in catering to your strengths and making them even stronger instead of trying to improve your weaknesses. Thanks for the post!

We do all have weaknesses as long as we are willing to acknowledge them. And keep pushing themselves to get a little better each time!

I just reread the part about staying involved and in the mix and I couldn't agree more. Mingling, just be yourself!
