Get Your Party On ... or Leave Town for the Day

Yes, friends, Sunday May 17, 2015 San Francisco will turn into a huge moving party with the annual Bay to Breakers Run starting at 8:00 AM.

Bay to Breakers 2013

The 12K foot race (and I use that term loosely) known as the Bay to Breakers has been an annual event since 1912, and gets zanier by the year. With more than 50,000 participants and well over 100,000 spectators, one can barely shuffle along until well after the Hayes Street Hill and Alamo Park. It's not until one enters Golden Gate Park that the crowds thin out enough to run, and then it's an ego run on a slight downhill grade to the Great Highway along the ocean.

Of course, with the fun and silliness and great numbers of people involved, streets across town are closed for the morning and a good part of the day.

My advice: if you're not taking part in the Bay to Breakers this year, don't attempt to cross town! For those of us living north of the Civic Center - head north across the Golden Gate bridge, or to Crissy Field and the Presidio. For those south of Market Street and Golden Gate Park, enjoy the quieter spots like Lake Merced, Buena Vista Park or the beaches and park lands of San Mateo County.

However, you spend tomorrow, enjoy the spirit of the day!

Not this year for me, George Souto - I've participated 3 or 4 times, will probably do so again some time.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel - Zoo is the right word. Most of the thousands are happy and silly. This is a city that likes to party!

People come from all states and many countries to participate, Joe Petrowsky - just think if you had been here this week, you could have joined our AR meet up, and then joined in the Bay to Breakers -- next year!

Lottie it's got to be a total zoo - but fun for those that enjoy those kind of events. There would have been a time when I would have been running in it - not anymore!

While I'm not saying I'll never participate again Anna Banana Kruchten - Arizona's Top Banana of Real Estate!, we're heading over the Golden Gate to some quieter trails in the Marin Headlands. Working today, playing tomorrow - a good mix.

Lottie, what a fun localism post! This is a run that I'm completely unfamiliar with and I loved the part about the "ego run" downhill, no less!!!

Nice of you to pass on to others the work-around if you're traveling in this area.

Lottie - My son recently ran in Pat's Run, which is a 4.2 mile run here in Tempe, AZ. There were 35,000 participants, and this was I believe the 7th year in a row he has run in it (and he is only 16).

The Bay to Breakers sounds like quite an event, and one my son would probably enjoy.

Sounds like the Bay to Breakers Run is one great event in San Francisco.

Good luck and success.

I actually ran the bay to breakers race in 1982 Lottie Kendall. It took 1/2 to get past the start line after the gun sounded and I think the only time I got past a jog was a sprint the last 1/2 mile for the cameras. Fun event but not a race

Not this year for me, Roy Kelley - but I'd do it again if a group of friends wanted to!

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 - The Bay to Breakers is a city-wide party, going on right now.

Hello Gita Bantwal - 50,000 +/- "runners" expected, plus twice the number of spectators!

Troy Erickson - my son-in-law went to school with Pat Tillman; he and my daughter fly down for Pat's Run every year. Good for your son!

Paul S. Henderson, Realtor - 1982 was the beginning of the heyday years; 1986 I think had over 100,000 runners. I did the run 4 or so times in the late 80s and 90s. I know the winners had crossed the finish line before we crossed the starting line!

Hi Lou Ludwig - Bay to Breakers is the biggest annual event in San Francisco to my knowledge. I'm not taking part this year; maybe again another year.

Like you said Lottie Kendall , it was a happening not a race. I drove 12 hours and crashed on a friends couch and then headed home soon after the event was over. It was fun and for me a one time shot...

I just love those ego runs, may all of our runs be slightly downhill. :)  Oops, there goes the ego, slightly up again now.  Yin Yang, balance, it's all about the balance. This would be a fun one to be involved in, no doubt.

There were, in 1982, way too many people wearing their birthday suits. I would have looked out of place in costume
