Make that Tank of Gas Last Longer this Summer

Gas prices are approaching the lowest levels they’ve been since 2005 and this summer you may want to get more mileage out the gas you put in your tank.  The best way to beat the dependence on gas is to get an electric car, but that isn’t feasible for everybody.  Until more options become available for sustainable transport, try out these driving tips to optimize your gas consumption.

When it’s hot in the summer months you will undoubtedly want to blast the A/C.  This can run through your gas tank pretty quickly if you have it on high all the time. Having the windows down creates drag and wind resistance, which can cause your car to push a little harder to maintain certain speeds.  A good hybrid for cooling involves having the windows down at low speeds and the A/C on low at high speeds.  If the weather outside is moderate even consider just opening the vents to your car and having the outside air come in.  In Highlands Ranch property management the weather can change multiple times a day.  If you are driving from property to property that you manage in one day, you can really feel the benefits to cooling the car like this.

There is an app called Waze that reports on current traffic, congested routes due to recent accidents and can find the cheapest prices for surrounding gas stations.  Try it out for a bit to increase efficiency with your daily commute.  Similarly, don’t speed when you’re driving daily.  You won’t save that much time, even going 10 mph faster than the speed limit will often only cut 1 to 2 minutes off your drive time.  Every 5mph you drive over 50 is like paying an additional 17 cents per gallon.  There is also the increased risk of a speeding ticket as well.

Always keep your tires at optimal inflation.  Carry a good pressure gauge and check on your tires weekly.  Tires wear more quickly when under inflated and can use a little more gas in the process.  Clear out all the unnecessary weight you may have in your car. If you drive solo most days just have the main essentials in your car.  If you’ve been meaning to take out that extra set of tires for weeks, just do it!  Hopefully a mixture of these tips will help you get further on your tank of gas this summer.  A lot of you will be in your cars for most of the summer, why not be a little more efficient if you can help it?

We have a little different issue with the heat here in Florida especially in the summer. Many times have carried 2 sets of car keys to keep A/C and car running to keep car cool. Not conducive to riding around with the windows down in the summer here.

My 4-cylinder Subaru is economical with a 5-speed transmission.  One thing I have noticed is that our traffic lights are not synchronized. I seem to always be stopping at every intersection for red lights.  Lots of wasted gas from thousands of cars every day waiting at red lights.  Traffic lights on major arteries should be synchronized for smoother traffic flow.
