Why We Hire Millennials

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with The Silent Partner Marketing

Why We Hire MillennialsMan, there are a LOT of people hating on Millennials these days.

I didn't even realize just how bad it was until the article I published last week - With the Rise of the Millennial Comes The Fall of the Suit.

I'm not sure if it's anger, jealousy or perhaps ignorance.  But there seems to be a lot of venom towards an audience that's shifting and redefining the work force.

Let's put down the pitchforks and torches for a minute.  Here are a few things you might not have known about Millennials.

  • According to Mobile Enterprise, 73% of Millennials say they should be able to modify and customize their work computer - and 63% say they will go around IT to get what they need.
  • According to Cisco, 87% of Millennials say they would choose to work for a company heavily invested in video over one that isn’t invested in video.
  • Bentley University’s Center for Women and Business found that 84% of Millennials surveyed believe that it’s more important to make a difference in the world than it is to achieve professional recognition.
  • Iconoculture found that 35% of employed Millennials have started their own business on the side for extra cash.
  • According to USA Today, 88% of Millennials either have deposited or would deposit a check by taking a picture of it with an app.
  • Baby Center found that 83% of new moms are Millennials.  Of these, 75% search for parenting advice on their mobile phones.

Why should we care about this seemingly random smattering of information?  Simple.

It's changing.

What's changing, you ask?

It's ALL changing.

The work day is no longer 9-5.  The work PLACE is no longer just the office.

People don't turn to the local newspapers for information.  They go online.

They don't rely on commercials to learn about products.  They read reviews.  They ask their friends on social media.

Listen, I'm not saying an old dog can't learn new tricks.  But when you go to a surgeon, do you want someone who has always lived in the world of medical...or someone who started learning it a couple of years ago so that he'd still have a job?

Most millennials don't remember life B.I. (before internet).  They haven't had to adjust their way of life - they've just always lived it.

Think about it like this.  Boil some water and throw the lobster in there.  He'll go crazy.

Put a lobster in a pot of cold water and bring it up to a boil - he won't know the difference, because things have adjusted while he was in it (let's ignore the whole dying part of that analogy).

In the past week, our new Millennial hire has run live video feeds for clients on Meerkat and Periscope, rolled out an Instagram and Snapchat marketing strategy successfully for three businesses that NEVER would have considered it before, and she's now working on turning a old-fashioned barber into a social media savvy monster.

Oh, and no pension needed.  Just a fridge full of Red Bull.  Good deal.

Not so fast with your perception. Why are more millennials living at home with their parents if what they know is so invaluable to employers?

Regardless of the generation, it's all about the Pareto principle, so few not all millennials will be successful and it's by choice, not by circumstances.

Likewise, we all must adapt and adopt to the changes in work, technology and lifes' opportunities to seek or achieve success or risk peril, so those skills and knowledge could still be mastered by previous generations and if they aren't, a millennial will probably secure their opportunity, wouldn't they?

Finally, competition increase productivity, so millennials are welcomed to the workforce and encourages the workforce to adapt and adopt to new challenges.

My kids are millennials.  I've always said that I'm in awe of my children, their abilities, their talents, the accomplishments.  Whether they're wearing suits or jeans and hoodies makes no difference.  It's the person within the clothing, their intent, their attitudes, and their work ethic that matters to me.  That said, I do believe there's a time and place for almost everything.  Being wise enough to know and act upon that is still important ...

Great post, as always, Kyle Reyes ...

I Like this age group.  They are planting gardens and wanting to use clothes lines again.   They think originally and eat organically   whats wrong with any of that?  AND When I  miss my grandmother I just have to hang out  with my niece.

I have 3 millenial daughters that I'm very proud of.  Only one of them fits every aspect of what you write and I treat each of them differently.  The love that I can communicate as effectively as they can via text, blog, or whatever and I respect them for who they are.

I think some of the differences are that babyboomers felt they worked earlier, had harder labor jobs, experienced drastic changes in technology at a more extreme level.  From my own experience, I was a banker when computers were first coming "online."  I started using micro-fische, and a computer filled an entire room.  A lot of things were done manually.  Bags of checks were delivered to a "clearing bank" and it took a couple of days for a check to clear.  Now that technology is everywhere, it's just learning new technology, not technology in general.

The best phrase for a different generation - it's just different.

I like the fact that millenials aren't afraid to think outside the box.  It keeps things fresh when I'm working with a millenial as a client.  I use the best technology and provide great stats outside of the MLS so they know I'm looking at every angle to satisfy their skeptical mind that I'm only looking for a commission.

Every generation brings new and wonderful things.  We have 3 children and all three are millennials ... 2 of the 3 are self employed and self-sufficient ... I love their fresh ideas and enjoy talking about their plans and hopes and dreams!  We had them, we still have them ... so let's join 'em!

Kyle, this is interesting because, except for the new mom thing,  your check list descirbed most of the agents in my office - and we are doing our part to raise the average age of Realtors in the US.    I think that the only resentment that a lot of the elders feel toward millenials is that millenials think they are unique, and they assume they are the only ones who really get all of the "changes" is the market place.  I think we are the lobsters who began in cold water and adapted over time.

Bottom line?  I think it's hard to generalize.  There are some totally amazing millenials in my life.  And there are others who, you know...

They often have the highest education and income. The ones know what they are doing are massing equity or some are spending every dollar they earned.

As a parent with several millinnials, I can identify with this post Kyle.  All of my kids have carved out their own way,  Both sons are serial entrepreneurs and successful.  One is a millionaire at 30 - actually 29.  And they just see things differently and use technology much more than their parents generation.  It's all good and I have learned a lot from them.  Change is good.

Awesome post.  I, too, do not know what the hate is all about.  I was speaking with someone the other day and decided that the old farts I seem to know (of which I am one) do not like change.  Just like our fathers did not like change.  People who loved Frank Sinatra hated Bruce Springsteen.  People who loved Bruce hate rap.  And it goes on and on....I love this generation and try to learn from them every single day!!

A terrific post Kyle, add to the list the compulsive need to multi task on their smart phones while attending meetings. Something I've had to adjust to as a new norm.

Interesting post. I had to click on it since I'm working with three millenials currently, one very highly organized in getting me data, one highly organzied sometimes and one not at all. So it is hard to pigeonhole them. I have a daughter millenial who lives at home, does everything online, sweats nothing. That is the one characteristic I see underlying most of them (I know most of her friends), they simply don't worry. I wish they took life a little more seriously.  But that is my general feeling; there is room for everyone to opin.

I think that the hate is really fear that is misconstrued.  Millenials relate to and communicate with the world in a manner in which may of us find to be counter intuitive.  Some people just don't understand them.  Another perspective on Millenials is that I have found many who are also very lazy and this is not to generalize the entire generation.  I think that there is more parental coddling than we were raised with and it has produced a more ecclectic group of people than generations past.  Props to those Millenials who paved their own way instead of paying their "corporate dues".  For the M's who expect a $100K+ corporate job with a general business degree, look to your counterparts who paved their own way rather than job hunt for years.

One of my favorite Millennials is my virtual Assistant.  He too does not have a normal work day.  My time he works noon to 9pm for social media purposes.  From his time - it's during the night as he is in the Philippines.   I'm so grateful for all that he does for me and my team.   I would love to have a whole team of Millennials just like him!
