Home Exterior Cleanliness IS Important!

Home Exterior

As real estate professionals we see homes day in and day out.  We take note of the overall condition of the home, cleanliness, up keep, amenities, layout, extra features, etc.  One of the areas that I see that is typically neglected somewhat is the home exterior.

Many times I will tour a home and be blown away by the interior cleanliness only to head outside to see a neglected exterior.  Siding that needs power washing, peeling paint, damaged trim, spider webs, hornets nests, clogged gutters, overgrown shrubs, dirty windows, areas of pooled, stagnant water, and concrete that needs to be cleaned.  Basically just a dirty exterior!

The potential buyer is looking at everything!  While the agent is retrieving the key to unlock the home, the buyers are standing there taking mental notes.  An entryway that is ragged and unkempt will immediately set the tone for the showing.

Before putting your home on the market, take a moment to asses the exterior condition of your home:

  • Power wash siding, concrete and brick that is discolored from moss or mold growth
  • Clean gutters
  • Trim shrubs and trees, fresh mulch in beds, add some colorful seasonal flowers
  • Repair any trim or siding
  • Re-mediate any standing water areas
  • Remove unnecessary items such as too many yard art pieces, unused flower pots, or anything that basically appears to be cluttered
  • Have the windows professionally cleaned if possible
  • Knock down all insects nests and spider webs
  • Make sure there are no holes in the yard or areas where someone could trip or fall

The exterior of your home does reflect on the overall care and maintenance of your home.  If you want top dollar for your listing, scrub up the outside and clean, clean, clean!  Remember - first impressions DO matter!

Paula McDonald ....Great post! I tell people all the time ....If you can't get them in ...you can't get it sold! The exterior is just as important as the inside.

Have a great weekend!

This is SO true.  I recently had a battle with trying to get a seller to clean up the outside.... the finally did and we were pending in no time flat.

Paula- very true.  You're selling the whole property, not just the interior.

Paula - The exterior is an important part to getting a home sold. You are right when you say, "The potential buyer is looking at everything".

Good morning Paula, I've had clients who pulled up tot he driveway and because of the exterior didn't want to go inside.  It does make a difference.
