May is a great time of year to inspect the items that you might overlook the rest of the year. Making sure you keep your home maintained will ensure that your home is doing what it is supposed to do, protect you from the elements. Here are 5 maintenance ideas to do this month.
1. Inspect Your Roof – now that the snow has melted, make sure that your roof is still in good shape. If you have any missing or loose shingles, get them fixed or replaced. Now is the time to get it done rather than once the bad weather starts.
2. Clean out your gutters – The leaves have fallen and it’s now time to get the debris from winter out of your gutters. Clogged gutters open your home to potential water damage – and you won’t know it until it’s too late.
3. Replace the Washing Machine Fill Hose – If you have had your washer for a while, have you noticed a smell that you might not be able to get rid of. Have you used the washing machine cleaner and it still stinks? It is probably the fill hose. You can replace it, and the smell will most likely be gone.
4. Clean all outside surfaces – This would include your deck, driveway, fence, and the porch. If you have a pressure washer, you can add some surface cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, and then spray away. Before long the surfaces will look fresh and clean.
5. Check seals around windows and doors – The winter can harden and crack your caulk around windows and doors. Inspect them and repair or replace as needed. You’ll reduce your air conditioning bill, and prevent water from entering your home and causing damage.
