We're Buying a Bee and Bee!
Debb Janes, Real Estate Agent with the Carl Group of Camas, Washington recently posted an interesting article worth reading particularly if you have never felt very friendly or very interested in bees. You may feel differently soon. Feel free to leave a comment but please post it to her blog.
Our Latest Acquisition - A Backyard Bee and Bee
We’ve just ordered a Bee and Bee for our backyard garden. Friends of the Earth is sending us a bamboo bee house specifically designed to attract Mason Bees. Our donation will help the planet and hopefully save the bees. Mason bees are native and non-stinging super pollinators that make our world more bloomtastic.
Mason bees are more productive than honey bees but do not produce honey. However, they are immune to some of the conditions that are causing grave concern for other bees. In addition, only 350 mason bees are needed to pollinate an acre of apple trees rather than 25,000 honey bees. Each mason bee visits as many as a thousand blossoms each day! Busy bees.
Bee Friendly to the Planet
Bees are responsible for giving us 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat, yet they are dying in huge numbers. Scientists have linked the unsustainable loss to a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids. Sadly, many backyard gardeners are still using these chemicals in their flower and vegetable gardens. Plus, many seeds, bulbs, and plants have been treated with these insecticides - be sure to purchase yours from organic suppliers.
We can do our part to attract pollinators such as mason bees and butterflies by planting the right kind of flowers, providing water, and by creating conditions critical to their habitat. For example, mason bees need mud for nesting. Plus, they need plants that bloom all season, from early spring until fall.
Our Bee and Bee will come with complete instructions, and we’re hoping it’s not too late in the year to make it a productive endeavor for this summer. Regardless, we intend to keep doing our part to make our backyard in Camas a save haven for bees and other pollinators. Here’s how you can donate to Friends of the Earth and get your own backyard Bee and Bee.
