Everyday is Memorial Day for me. Since I live just a short distance from Joint Base Lewis McChord and Madigan medical center; I see the sacrifices that our service people make daily and I read of some that won't be coming home also.

Paul,
This a very profound and moving post. One of our clients was a marine stationed near San Diego. When he was on leave, he drove to San Clemente to enjoy a night out, because in SD he was subject to ridicule and hateful actions from those opposed to the war. It is good the times have changed, and people are beginning to respect those who serve, have served and made the ultimate sacrifice. A

Hi Paul - You're right. The sacrifices made by those who serve us deserve constant recognition and respect - one day a year is insufficient thanks.

Those were tough times Ron and Alexandra Seigel ! I had several close friends beaten to within an inch of their lives after just coming home where they thought it was safe...

Dick Greenberg I was not a hero by any means and I was not looking for any special treatment just human respect.
I have so much respect for our young men and women who serve and their families who dread answering their phone in the middle of the night. Even those who serve in the Peace Corps aren't safe or respected...

Paul you are so right on about this. It was shameful the way Vietnam Vets were treated upon returning home. Service people deserve our profound appreciation and gratitude. And I know what it's like to dread the phone ringing later at night. Our son Paul served overseas and it was always good to know he was back in the country. Thank you Paul - for your service!!

Paul I think a lot of folks feel that way (service people or not). We have so much to be grateful for and then some!! So many folks paved the way for all of us, just as we do now. Wisdom.

Good evening Paul. I did 2-1/2 tours of 'Nam doing covert operations. I still have no love for the Sinatra B. Talk about Collusion with the enemy. Folks like her cost us the war.

It was friends and family from my generation who served in Vietnam. And, you are right, their return home had to of been a horrendous affair. The country was torn apart by the war, and our service men and women were seen as a strong symbol of it.
Over the years, attitudes have changed, and gradually the vets from the Vietnam war have been able to receive their deserved thanks for their efforts. I'm glad you survived it, Paul! And, thank you for your service!

Paul, Very well said! I may be many years out of the service, but those that serve then and still are never far from my mind. Some of my classmates and shipmates are no longer with us, the blank check they wrote all of us was cashed. Bill

Paul,
Your post has so many memories for me and others of this era. I got married to a guy right after he got out of Viet Nam. Not only was it difficult for him, it was painful for me to watch him and how he was treated. You're absolutely right, people didn't have any respect for our Viet Nam Vets and they were very, very cruel. As a wife, I suffered and I felt forgotten after he passed away from Agent Orange and was denied benefits even though he was in the 101 Airborn Division in Phu bai in 1970 and I cared for his wounds from the time he got out until the day he died.

Paul,
It was so late when I commented on your post. Selfishly, I reflected on my own life story and my spouses too which had a profound impact on me. What I failed to do was empathize with you and to say thank you for the services you did for our country. I believe in democracy and a free nation. What you had to do was no easy task - nothing in grade school or High School could have prepared you for what you did. Courageously, you did your duty; not just for the Army but the Navy as well. I can't even imagine what it was like for your ship to receive letter bombs. There are so many untold stories and soldiers were dismissed and expected to learn how to cope in a society that wasn't proud of them and that is a sin and a curse that left many soldiers and their spouses feeling depressed, sad, alienated from their own country and the people who professed all they believed in was love! You did not come home to loving arms, that was unforgivable. Since I joined the Women's Auxiliary VFW, I have talked to many people who served their country well only to come home and spat upon and shown no respect. For those sins of our nation, I am sorry. I always held a special place in my heart for our military. Unfortunately, our own government did not serve and protect you when you returned from active duty.
I'm thankful that you included the paragraph about the Peace Corp because I recently applied because I can never retire. Until now, I thought it was the perfect solution, but I can see, the Peace Corp would put my life in danger. I guess it isn't anything like what President Kennedy intended!
Thank you for releasing all those painful thoughts which only scratches the surface. Peace be with you Paul. You are brave, intelligent, kind, and you are my AR hero!
