Breckenridge Colorado is voted one of the most charming and quaint, smallest towns in the United States.  The town of Breckenridge was formally created in 1859.  Named after John C. Breckenridge, the 14th vice president of the United States.  The town's elevation is 9,603 feet above sea level.  Bordering a big valley on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains.  In 1859, Breckenridge of course, was known as a gold mining town.  Now, Breckenridge is a world-class ski area.  The Summit elevation is 12,998 feet.  With a 3,398 total vertical rise, there are 34 ski lifts total.  2,908 skiable acres, 25 of which are located within the terrain park.  The Breckenridge Ski and Ride school is considered one of the very best in the ski resort industry.

The town itself is 5.3 square miles within the town boundary.  The Colorado Census Bureau says there are 3,500 permanent residents.  However, Breckenridge Ski Resort can accommodate up to 36,000 people on a busy day.  There are 76 restaurants and bars, 203 shops and boutiques, 2,583 condo units, one indoor and one outdoor skating rink, 27 holes on the Jack Nichlaus designed golf course, 2 indoor and 12 outdoor tennis courts, 6 churches, 2 ball fields and one whitewater kayak park.  Breckenridge hosts a variety of public events each year.  The International Snow Sculpture Championships is one of the most downtown events.  In 2014, the Dew Tour came to Peak 8 in Breckenridge.  The winter Ullr fest parade pays homage to the Norse God of Snow.  The Ullr parade is a must see if you haven't already!  In the summertime Breckenridge hosts the National Repetory Orchestra and the Breckenridge Music Festival.

Other events held on the mountain include the annual Imperial Challenge.  This is Breckenridge's version of a triathalon.  In 2000, Breckenridge carried out a massive expansion and lift upgrade, adding the largest terrain expansion in Colorado.  Construction of a new 8 passenger gondola was announced in 2006.  The Breck Connect Gondola opened to the public, improving skier and rider access from the town to the base area of Peak 8.  2011 and 2012 marked the ski resort's 50th anniversary.  No new lifts were built, however, the Colorado Super Chair replaced all of the older and orignial chairs.  2013 saw the long awaiting expansion of Peak 6.  Peak 6 transports visitors above treeline to an altitude of 12,300 feet, providing access to intermediate or blue square terrain.  Families wanting a taste of skiing the back bowls will be delighted with the Peak 6 expansion.

In the downtown core, the Breckenridge Riverwalk is a local's favorite.  The Riverwalk is a 1,500 park along the Blue River which includes walking and bicycle paths, outdoor seating areas for performing arts, and more than suitable venue for plenty of the music events that come to town.  Breckenridge offers a 69,000 square foot recreational facility.  The facility contains indoor tennis courts, lap pools, racquet ball courts, indoor rock climbing walls, a water slide and indoor running track.  Breckenridge constructed a 17,000 square foot skating facility called the Stephen C. West arena.  The arena offers a range of programs from public and free-style skating lessons to youth and adult hockey leagues. The town of Breckenridge is home to 27 hole Jack Nicklaus designed golf course.  These are three independent nine hole golf courses.
