Website to Help Buyers Understand the Real Cost of a Location

Affordability Index<http://htaindex.cnt.org/> This website was written up in the Washington Post Real Estate/Business section today, Sunday, April 13, 2008. It is an interesting tool to show buyers average cost of homeownership, renting and transportation costs in a particular area on a map.

The site currently has data for 52 different regions around the US, but not all (if you want to Indianapolis or Albuquerque (to name a few), you're out of luck ... but maybe they will add more in time).  Additioanally, it seems most of the information is based on 2000 census data. Even with all these limitations, it is an interesting mechanism to get buyers to look at the "real" cost of a particular location ... and this is only the edge of reality: what about the cost of being crabby when you get home from a bad commute?

At any rate, it's worth a peek.

I talk with a lot of my buyers about not only the financial cost, but the time penalty and quality of life.  For some, living out is the best alternative, for others, they get past the price when they see the full cost.
