<http://htaindex.cnt.org/> This website was written up in the Washington Post Real Estate/Business section today, Sunday, April 13, 2008. It is an interesting tool to show buyers average cost of homeownership, renting and transportation costs in a particular area on a map.
The site currently has data for 52 different regions around the US, but not all (if you want to Indianapolis or Albuquerque (to name a few), you're out of luck ... but maybe they will add more in time). Additioanally, it seems most of the information is based on 2000 census data. Even with all these limitations, it is an interesting mechanism to get buyers to look at the "real" cost of a particular location ... and this is only the edge of reality: what about the cost of being crabby when you get home from a bad commute?
At any rate, it's worth a peek.
