Good morning everyone-Chincoteague Va is famous for the ponies. It was the reason I decided to visit there. Originally I had planned on going in July for the pony swim but I have heard that there can be 10,000 people that come to that so I opted to pass on that for this yr. They have places that they can be spotted during the yr including on different cruises on the Islands. I didn't see anything in Assateague Island which is on the Maryland side. I planned on a cruise on Chincoteague in hopes of seeing not only horses but dolphins. I didn't get to see any dolphins but I had seen them in Virginia beach on a cruise.
Well life is full of surprises. I was originally planned for the 10 am cruise but there were only 3 people scheduled so it got switched to 1 p.m. That morning I went to Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge. While I did see several birds, there were no ponies to be seen.
I headed back to grab lunch and call the personal care aide taking care of Mom before heading for the 1 p.m. cruise. I was parked in the parking lot of McDonalds taking on the phone with the aide when I spotted my first ponies. I was excited as I saw 3 of them. I got off the phone and went over to where they were. They were beautiful animals.
There were 3 gumball type machines you could put in a quarter and get corn. I did that but it was only about 1/8 of a cup for the quarter. I also spotted a sign that said horse feed $.50 a bag. The ponies were beside this bicycle place so I went in to see if that is where the horse food was. I got 2 bags. There was a bit more food for the $.50 than than the $.25 cent corn machine gave you.
Well these beauties knew what I had and it didn't take them long to get up to come get their treats.
THIS BEAUTY WAS THE ONLY STANDING
THIS ONE WAS STRETCHED OUT ENJOYING THE SUN UNTIL I BROUGHT OUT THE FOOD
THIS ONE WAS SITTING DOWN BUT IT DIDN'T TAKE HIM LONG TO GET UP ONCE I BROUGHT OUT THAT FOOD. FUNNY HOW THAT HAPPENS. I ESPECIALLY LOVE THE COLOR OF THIS ONE. THE OTHER TWO COULD HAVE BEEN TWINS.
I DIDN'T THINK TO ASK BUT I AM ASSUMING THE LADIES THAT OWNS THESE 3 PONIES BOUGHT THEM DURING THE PONY AUCTION THEY HAVE IN JULY WHEN THEY ALSO HAVE THE ANNUAL PONY SWIM. THIS WAS A REAL TREAT.
After leaving there I went on the cruise. Hoping to see more. They were elusive and while I didn't see only this one. It was great because she had a colt too. She was at a distance and I cropped it to bring it as close as possible.
Now the last one I saw wasn't a pony and it wasn't on Chincoteague Island. It was at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and it was a Clydesdale. While I only saw one on the way in as I rode the train around the whole place I saw another one.
Who would have thought I would have gotten the best close ups and be as close to these beautiful animals next to a McDonalds and off the island. All in all a great time.
