I've been thinking about Life. . . Love. . . and Real Estate.
This time 20 years ago, my husband and I were living in Sicily. I remember when he called to tell me we were moving there. I was thinking "woohoo! Tropical island paradise here I come!" Wow, was I in for a surprise. Their way of life was so vastly different. For starters, there were no shopping malls or fast food joints! Herds of sheep had the rite of way on the road. People never seemed to be in a hurry. As a matter of fact, everyday around two o'clock in the afternoon, everything shut down. People went home for a five course lunch and then took a nap. No wonder I tend to get cranky in the afternoon. Of course a lot of them didn't have far to travel since they lived above the store their family owned. Then about 4pm the city woke up and everyone was back to work until closing time. Dinner was definitely a family affair. And I mean the whole family. It was custom for daughters and their family to go to mom and dads for dinner every night. (sounds good to me!) I miss those days.
Life here in the US is so hectic and harried. Even our microwaves aren't fast enough for us anymore. We create "conveniences" to make our lives easier but then we have to work harder and longer to be able to afford all the latest and greatest, not to mention the cost of maintaining these things. Front porches are seldom built anymore; we don't have time to sit and visit with our neighbors. Sometimes I get so busy I feel like my home is nothing more than a hotel room (but who fired all the housekeeping staff?!)
So why do I do what I do? Due to some twists and turns in my life the last several months, I've taken some time to really think about that. I remembered why I chose to get in to real estate in the first place - I wanted to focus on the people and things that I love. Bonus: I love being a real estate agent! And when you love what you do you tend to be really good at it. You also get to meet some really cool people and some of them become new friends.
I've decided to enjoy family, friends, and life in general a bit more this year. Who wants to join me?
