It's the weekend - Be SAFE, Please!

This message came to my inbox from my broker this morning:

"News Alert This Morning - 6/5/15Two different Real Estate Agents were robbed at GUNPOINT while showing property in Florida. Gunman may be on the move.No transaction is worth your life or your safety. Do not meet strangers at a house. Have potential Buyers meet you in the office, talk to their lender prior to showing, get a copy of their Driver's License, call someone and give them a description of the prospect &; the car tag number, let someone know your showing itinerary, check in with someone throughout the day, don't meet a stranger by yourself! These same precautions should also be taken when going on a listing appointment with a stranger!Take precautions &; be Safe! Sent By: DS"

Here are a few of my own safety tips:Be Careful Out There!

1.  Leave all jewelry at home, I NEVER wear my engagement/wedding rings when showing property.  Even if I know my client well.  As real estate agents, we are easy to spot based on where we are and what we are doing.

2.  Park on the street, not in the driveway so that you can't be blocked in whenever possible.

3.  Lock your purse or other valuables like laptops in the trunk of your car.

4.  When showing, lock the door behind you.

5.  DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS.  Say "NO" to situations that make you "feel" uncomfortable.

Perfect post, our policy is we never meet a showing client at a home without a meeting at the office first.

I just saw this on the news the other day.  Real estate agents are easy pickins.  Take a friend, hold onto pepper spray, fake talk on the phone.

I'm good.  And by good I mean prepared, careful, and make smart decisions about people.  One time recently I even called the police because guy who came in office was acting really weird.

I'm usually good too.  Prepared and careful.  I have also been known to keep my husband on the phone in my pocket to listen in.  I really don't feel like you can be too careful.

Those are good tips.  Also, in addition to making certain you are working with qualified buyers, having them pre-approved for a loan, also helps add a measure of safety that you are working with those who are, who they say they are.

Good morning Jenna. Too bad that real estate agents have been the target of thugs. Thanks for the heads up.

Myrl Jeffcoat Pre-approvals are mandatory.  But, you know, crooks are savvy and things like that are easy to forge.  It's a dangerous world.

Michael Thornton it is too bad.  We have typically worked alone, especially in the field and the safety concerns make that more difficult everyday.
