This message came to my inbox from my broker this morning:
"News Alert This Morning - 6/5/15Two different Real Estate Agents were robbed at GUNPOINT while showing property in Florida. Gunman may be on the move.No transaction is worth your life or your safety. Do not meet strangers at a house. Have potential Buyers meet you in the office, talk to their lender prior to showing, get a copy of their Driver's License, call someone and give them a description of the prospect &; the car tag number, let someone know your showing itinerary, check in with someone throughout the day, don't meet a stranger by yourself! These same precautions should also be taken when going on a listing appointment with a stranger!Take precautions &; be Safe! Sent By: DS"
Here are a few of my own safety tips:
1. Leave all jewelry at home, I NEVER wear my engagement/wedding rings when showing property. Even if I know my client well. As real estate agents, we are easy to spot based on where we are and what we are doing.
2. Park on the street, not in the driveway so that you can't be blocked in whenever possible.
3. Lock your purse or other valuables like laptops in the trunk of your car.
4. When showing, lock the door behind you.
5. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. Say "NO" to situations that make you "feel" uncomfortable.
