It's National Homeownership Month ~ Reason #2 To Own Your Own Home

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

June is National Homeownership Month and here's Reason #2 why you should own your own home:

Owning A Home Motivates You To Be A Better Citizen And Be More Involved In Civic Activities

Reason #2 to own your own home

Studies about the impact of homeownership on citizenship and involvement in local communities have indicated that:

  • Homeowners are 1.28 times more likely to become involved in neighborhood groups and 1.32 times more likely to join a civic association than renters.

  • Homeowners are 65% more likely to vote in local elections versus 54% for renters (although some studies have indicated a 69% to 44% ratio). It would seem natural that homeowners would be more concerned about local affairs and get involved in community issues to maintain/improve their property values.

  • Homeowners are more knowledgeable about environmental issues and more likely to recycle than renters.

  • Homeowners have a greater sense of belonging to their communities, which increases their activity in community groups.

If you're a renter, who would like to make the transition from renter to homeowner, contact Nina Hollander with Coldwell Banker Realty.

We can help you turn your rent payments into mortgage payments!

Great post Nina.  Something that just never crossed my mind but of course if you take pride in your home you'll take pride in the neighborhood, community and therefore engrain yourself in it all.

Nina, Are you saying that this is a cause and effect thing? Or is it that owners are just more inclined to be involved because that is the kind of people that they are?

I explained to my tenant who hems and haws about rent increases that it is one of the perks of being a lord of the land...or landlord. I encouraged that tenant to become one

Chris and Dick Dovorany ~ thanks for the compliment. Even in Charlotte, I see rental neighborhoods that are not as well maintained as neighborhoods where the preponderance of homes are owned.

Richie... it just takes some of them longer to "get it" about owning versus renting.

Bill Roberts ~ I'm just saying that when you own your own home you are more invested in your neighborhood and community as it keeps property values up. You own a major asset that needs looking after.

Nina, All of those homeowner facts are excellent and are a  reality as a homeowner has skin the game while renter have essentially nothing at stake.. Renters packup and leave when their lease is over in many cases.

Robert (Bob) Gilbert ~ we talk about homeownership benefits a lot from a financial perspective, but the non-financial benefits are also very important.

Evelyn Johnston ~ of course as Realtors, Evelyn, it's natural for us to focus on financial benefits of home ownership. But the non-economic benefits that often result in economic benefits shouldn't be overlooked.
