Loving Google Photos So Much I'm Thinking of Making it a Mix Tape

I have the sneaky suspicion that google is trying to win the internet.

google photos

They are so needy that they keep giving us stuff for free.

Yes. There is a catch. Everything we feed the machine helps google learn about us. And then sell us something in the way of banner ads, and what-not.

But hey- I blog.

I've already given up privacy.

So, google, if you want to know my habits and in return give me free email, google docs, google drive, google maps and now google photos with free unlimited video and photo storage then yes, I will marry you. (Sorry Lucy.)

So, there are already paid (and limited free version) options for photo storage (dropbox, icloud, skydrive, etc.). I know them all because I have them and still use them.

I also have Amazon Prime- which, if you didn't know has unlimited photo storage. (Yes! and it's awesome.)

Google photos now has unlimited photo and video storage along with other features: animated gif maker (animate by combining several photos in a burst), movie (with soundtrack) creation, smart search (photo analysis helps define what are in the photos so that you can search without a whole lot of hashtag creation), panorama stitching (combine photos to make a wider picture), filters for photo enhancement. (Sheesh. I am pressing the parenthesis button a lot in this post.)

OK, do you need to know more about the catch?

1) the unlimited photos is only mostly unlimited. You have to pay for full high resolution storage. Still, the resolution they offer is still high enough for almost all purposes. I have found that only in the case of large format wall prints would I want to work from the original photo.

2) The more you tell google (or any web company) about you, the more they know. For instance, here is some conjecture: from your photos google will know if you like to travel, what types of destinations, do you have a newborn? what is your race? your age? and many more things. They already know about you from your email content and your search history. Your photos fill in the rest.

So, if you are OK with living in this internet tell-all world and want to store your pictures for free- this service is for you. You can find out more at photos.google.com.

Chuck Willman I need to keep my clients' photos archived on my own storage devices for safety and security. I use 1TB drives and store the drives in a safe place. This service from G may work for some, but not me. Thanks!

I'm a google fan Chuck Willman but I'm looking forward to seeing the Apple/Google war that is brewing because Google stepped on Apples hardware toes. My understanding is Apple is rolling out a search engine with NO advertising vs Googles search engine that is 90% paid advertising.

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI agree with you on the privacy stuff. I keep a terabyte server and backup as well for private files. The family photos are best kept off of Picasa and google+ unless one knows how to keep them private. But. as anything we use on the net can be hacked I sort of gave up on pretending anything shared with icloud, google, dropbox and the rest can't show up in the public. So- as there are two disclaimers in the above post- if anyone pays for a service to do the same and is aware of privacy issues- this is the freebie.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I agree. Google search is so bought that it's no longer my preferred search engine. I prefer privacy searches. Another thing- any site that uses cookies as a condition of search is gathering info.

Good morning Chuck.  I was wondering when Apple would strike back and after reading Bob "RealMan" Timm now I wonder when and what Google will do in return..

James Dray I'm not holding my breath that Apple will actually build a search engine. They do have a search interface called Spotlight- which has been around for a while (it's not an internet search engine as much as it is a device search) but some, such as Motley Fool, write that Apple is very unlikely to become an actual search provider. This would require taking the interface and making it an engine- which I doubt they'd find a monetary reason to pursue. After all- they have their iAd platform which monetizes search. I tend to use Bing for search, as it appears to bring better results for me. And, this is the same search that Apple's Spotlight uses. It's a bit of an anti-google search engine but, like pretty much any search engine- has it's own magnetization format. So- if you use spotlight for search, currently your data belongs to Apple and Microsoft. And I have nothing against that. Search engines are not cheap to operate and we shouldn't expect providers to offer this without something in return for them.

For the privacy concerned- duckduckgo is a search engine that many use to keep their searches private. They bill themselves as the search engine that doesn't track you. Apple let's you choose this search engine from their list, as do the other competing browsers. Note: Though duckduckgo will search with better privacy, it too is ad supported with revenue generated from a yahoo-bing alliance.

So. For now- if you search, ads will find you.

When you're on the internet- you are a part of a very public network.

I'm not an overly private person either so this doesn't bother me.  It just takes time to learn it, which I haven't taken to do!

Susan Mangigian you're the first to comment that you're fine with free storage. I didn't realize we were so few in numbers. It's actually pretty easy to set up so I think you would have very little trouble.

Hi Chuck Willman I remember when I first heard the term "transparent" as it applies to the net. The meaning of that term as certainly changed along the way. Like you, I gave up privacy a long time ago. When you're online you're in public. I don't put anything online I'd like to keep strictly private. I would like the opportunity to see my profile from Google's side of the curtain.

Rene Fabre It's just so much easier living life that way. For those who think they have privacy it can be eye-opening to see how exposed we are. Still, we are one of billions of others on the net. If anything, I'd like more exposure so that I can connect with people with whom I can have my next great business relationship.
