Welcome to Charming Southport, Connecticut!
I love running because it forces me to slow down life's hectic pace, gather my thoughts and really take in the sights of the beautiful area in which I live (Fairfield County, CT). On a recent Thanksgiving Day morning, my family and I participated in the annual 5 mile road race through part of Connecticut's Gold Coast. I was captivated by the picturesque, seaside village of Southport. I returned on a sunny, summer day to take another look.
Just over an hour's train ride from Manhattan, Southport, settled in 1639, offers a quintessential coastal New England vibe. Everywhere you'll find stately homes with manicured lawns and picket fences that were once owned by sea captains who lived here over the years.
The Historic District features homes dating back three centuries. Residents take pride in the village's history and tradition, and celebrate with events like the Blessing of the Fleet and Street Parade held every June.
Down Pequot Avenue I pass by the Pequot library which was founded in 1889. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is a cultural hub and host to many community events throughout the year.
Approaching Harbor Road you'll find the Pequot Yacht Club, a popular facility that provides training facilities for sailors from all over Fairfield County.
Tranquil Southport public beach is just a half mile to the west.
Next time you venture up the Connecticut Turnpike (I-95), be sure to bear right off exit 19 and take some time to explore the enchanting village of Southport!
